Have any of you disabled closed-loop fueling (run open-loop always)?

Yeah its the speed density guys. I think with Cobb you can have a transition between CL and OL

well, there are guys not on speed density that do it sometimes as well. i will do it sometimes for tuning, but always turn CL back on. there are, however, some people that run their MAF based cars in OL all the time. you are going to lose some MPG doing this, which is why i don't choose to do it on my vehicles.

I thinkin bout disabling just for fun. Im tuned speed density, but my car is not a dd so mpg not a big deal to me. Speed density hates life at idle lol.

interesting you should say that because most higher whp speed density setups run significantly smoother across the board than higher whp maf based setups

when your front o2 sensor goes bad you go into a half-assed speed density/limp mode map. this is not the same thing that happens when you disable the CL fueling.

Had to turn up my idle to about 950-1000 rpm so it wouldnt die. But I think best thing would be run maf/SD...

thats a misconception most people have about SD. CL is still there and all the fueling corrections, just like MAF....so you still experience the same issues with 02 sensors going bad and causing hesitations and random fueling. you can turn off the front 02 just like with maf but as was already pointed out, you'll prob see a drop in mpg.

950-1000rpm isn't bad at all...hell, mine wouldn't idle lower than 1050-1150 smoothly. anything 1000rpm or less and it would have a little bit of a surging rpm, misfire pretty badly, and during cold weather if i coasted to a stop with the clutch pressed, the car would stall occasionally. just 50-100 rpm higher, and all these problems went away and it ran and idle VERY well.
i am on maf not sd...usually sd helps get rid of alot of these issues because you don't have the drastically reduced resolution from running larger maf housings. |

^ most of the idle issues and misfires are caused by the larger injectors imo and not the maf. running a big ass injector at low ipw is like asking a fire hose to behave like a garden hose.
my 89mm maf idled fine. there was only one spot when cruising ~75mph that SD cleared up over that. everything else i dont feel a difference at all. |

^ what he said...when CL is disabled, it essentially is just there to plug a hole in the exhaust and give you a narrowband o2 sensor to log.

the other downside of removing CL (the front 02) is that you dont allow the ecu to correct for any leaks. so if you pop a leak the car may be undrivable without the corrections.

One set just stuck open 100% of the time, the car would start but it would barely idle because one cylinder was just dumping fuel and it was undriveable. Another set seemed okay at first, but once the car warmed up it wouldn't idle, constantly died. AFR while cruising was all over the place. It seemed like WOT ran better than anything else, but AFR was still inconsistent. Another set idled fine and was okay under really low load, but if you tried WOT it would go really lean and the more fuel you would add to the map the leaner it would get. My understanding was that a few other cars ran fine with them for a month or two before they went down hill. Another set I know was running fine until one injector stuck shut in the middle of a WOT dyno pull and blew the motor. |
