Not sure if this has been asked, I'm sure it has and I apologize, I just can't seem to find an answer.
So I'm running e85, built motor, etc. Everyone that drives behind me says that they can smell it pretty decently. I am catless and would like to know if replacing my downpipe with a catted downpipe would help the smell. Sent from my iPhone using NASIOC |

Are cats really necessary when you're running e85, since it isn't a carbon based fuel? Running regular gas without cats is incredibly bad for the environment. I'm curious how emissions from e85 are, does anyone know?

really? No, not really.
You are carbon based, I am carbon based, Sugar is carbon based and alcohol is carbon based. Ethanol Molecule The base gasoline molecule: Gasoline has additives in it, so what you're actually burning is a little bit different. Regardless, this shows the difference in the amount of carbon per molecule and the added Oxygen in ethanol. This is why you need approx 30% more ethanol than gasoline. So yes, cats are still required. |

I thought the primary byproduct of burning ethanol was H2O, whereas for unleaded fuel it's CO?

It is. H2O and CO2. However, you aren't burning just ethanol. E85 ranges from 60 to 82 percent ethanol. The rest is gasoline.

What if I were to run e100? I guess what I'm getting at is, at what percentage do cats become necessary?

Is E-85 any more corrosive than gasoline? IE. how does it affect durability and longevity?

ethanol draws alot more moisture in which will be much more corrosive and yes it will take its tole on things alot quicker then gas will. I have been on nothing but e85 for over 2 years now and have seen no negative affects other then a blown motor from to so much powa!!!

I have about 3500 miles on it, and it still chatters and shudders when warm, and doesn't like to be slipped. At the track it's perfect; it's just as a daily driver in stop-and-go it really sucks. It's also substantially heavier than the stock (I'd say as much as 50% heavier clutch pedal). I'm actually going in on Friday to get it swapped out for a Southbend Stage 3 Endurance. I had a chance to test one out, and it's perfect; a little heavier than stock but way lighter than the Exedy, and no shuddering to speak of. |

Ya. That's what I had originally at 500 wheel tq. It was at the edge and I don't think it would hold 690 wheel tq Soni swapped to the 6 puck. I definitely don't love it starting out. But it does hold the power.

also running an exedy stage 1 HD, won't buy another. It is different than the push style "stage 1" though, for the 5mt cars. Two friends have one without any issue. The "HD" version is only available for the pull type 6mt application it appears.

I'm a big fan of the Competition Stage 3 clutch. Its a segmented ceramic design so it holds power, sheds heat but its still not bad to drive IMO. Its rated for 500 torque and it held up well to a lot of abuse with my Dom 3.5 turbo setup at full boost.
I'm switching to an EFR 8374 turbo so I needed something stronger so I went with the Competition twin. The price is right on it and I drove it in a friend's car and was impressed how drivable it is for an un-sprung small disc twin. Like any strong clutch, it will suck in stop/go traffic but my car doesn't see a lot of that. |
