I'm looking on Craigslist for winter tires for my stock 2012 wrx. I managed to find:

http://boston.craigslist.org/bmw/pts/3450737094.html

I'm not good at all with tires. But I noticed the lug pattern matches and the size looks like it is what a lot of people run for winters. With the information in this ad, can you tell if they will fit?

What width are the wheels? Do they have the correct offset for your WRX?

So after hours of research, a good deal came in.

I was planning on putting a set of General Tire Altimax Arctic next week from sears for $570. I stumbled upon a good deal, and for the same price ($570) OTD tax included, I ordered a set of 225/45R17 Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 from Discount tire.

I am using a set of '06 BBS I purchased for $100 from a guy off Nasioc Classified.

So my question is, which would be the better buy? They both cost the same. What do you guys recommend?

Definitely the blizzak lm-60's great performance winter tire.

I would say your choice depends on how the road conditions are in your area of Chicago... Do you see a lot of unplowed roads or more cleared roads?

LM-60 are good tires but you do sacrifice some winter performance for dry/clear road performance. If you drive more highways/plowed roads they'll end up lasting you longer than a set of General Altimax tires with highway driving.

I'm leaning towards the LM-60's but my main concern is how fast the tread goes. I've read some blizzak's tread goes quick, and can only be used for about 3-4 winters.

What's your opinions on that?

i personally have never experienced the wear of blizzak's so I can't say that my opinions will serve you in seeing how fast those tires will wear. It all comes down to your driving style, the type of roads and speed you drive on those tires.

My opinion is that those lm-60's will last you longer than the general altimax tires just cause they're performance winter tires so they're designed to be useful on dry roads also w/o wearing out as fast because they're made of a bit harder compound as the general altimax is made of soft compound that won't harden in very extreme temperatures (dedicated studdable winter tires).

Here's a little description of the difference between your two choices category, hope it helps with your decision.

I had LM-25's and they didn't wear fast. I got about 25,000mi out of them. The LM series doesn't have the multicell compound layer like the non-performance Blizzaks so they wear better.

I agree that the LM's will last longer than the Altimax's. However, comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. The altimax is a squishy snow tire, while the LM is a stiffer performance winter.

I also have a set of LM-25 Blizzaks (predecessor to the LM-60). I believe when new they had 11/32" tread depth, and now with 13,000 easy miles on them they are down to 7/32".

I just got some new Dunlop Graspic DS-3's for winter. Does anyone have some on their car? How are they for winter?

Got the General Altimax too on my '11 WRX (stock wheels)! I was about to get Toyo GaritKX but really heard good stuff about the Generals (I have the AS4 on my Legacy 3.0R and very good experience). The GaritKX are on the Legacy for winter.

Right now, I am 100% satisfied (ok we only got 1 snowstorm, the good one is tonight )

Did you notice any difference in snow performance while driving the stock wheels with the general altimax this season then before when you had the same tires on the steelies Ben?

Just a heads up... I inquired about these for my '13 wrx. Guy posted the wrong lug pattern, they're actually 5x110. He had them on a 2006 Saab 9-5.

I swapped over to some OEM 16" WRX rims with Michelin X-Ice 3 tires for the winter. First impressions is that they are significantly quieter than the stock Dunlop summers. They are getting slightly better mileage too in the 200 miles I've ridden on them (from thinner tires, I presume). I can't speak for their ice/snow traction yet, but all reviews from the 3-series and 2-series X-Ice tires say it should be great.

The one downside is that the steering is noticeably looser. Is this just because they are breaking in, or is it a result of the skinnier tires?

EDIT: I should say the steering is LIGHTER, not necessarily looser...The car still tracks straight and feels pretty confident, but I'm not ready to push it into corners yet, even on a dry day.

Same thing here. When I put on the X-Ice 2's from my Conti DW's. I noticed the steering was way lighter, but not 'loose'.

Yeah the wheel is much easier to turn with snows on, definitely noticed that when I put mine on this year.

I would guess it's just because of the taller, more flexible tread.

Yes and because of the soft rubber composition with the "tread slits" the word escapes me at the moment but because the main contact lugs aren't one solid piece it definitely changes the tire characteristics and how it feels.
