There's a set of metal bars at the "bottom", on which the head unit sits.

The depth of the enclosure is more than enough to allow a head unit to sit with an inch or so of clearance in front of it

Is there a rom or app you could recommend so that it basically always stays in car mode and screen stays on when the charger is on and shuts the screen off when no charge is detected?

Or is the stock rom/software pretty good at handling that?

Also is there any receiver you would recommend? I was thinking of getting one with bluetooth so that the audio isn't converted to a analog signal and then processed again for a second time but I could see issues with bluetooth phone calls as it might try to use the mic on the receiver.

Also is the Mic on the nexus 7 located in the front or does it get muted when hidden behind bezel?

Sorry for the 50 questions.

Also have you considered hacking up the main camera to set it up as a backup camera?

I believe if you go into developments options, you can check something like "keep device awake while charging", this should be what you're after.

I found a you tube video of a similar build on a c5 and he was using an app called tasker that does what I want.

- I use Tasker to make sure screen stays on while charger is on. Tasker can also do alot of automation.
- The JVC receiver I have is excellent - highly recommend getting one with bluetooth otherwise you'll have a hard time with calls....
- As far as I know the Mic on the nexus 7 is in front. But you don't really use it (phone would use the mic of JVC headunit), you'd only use it for things like Google Now/speech to text. It works fine even with a bezel around it.

Since it seems like the audio for the tablet is controlled by the headunit. So I understand the usage of the ASWC to simulate the audio controlls.

However how are the Up/Down controls maintained?

The up/down controls serve no purpose right now. I don't really have a use for them.

That being said, you could easily make them work by using BT to stream the tablet's audio. In that case, the up/down would be passed back to the tablet via the BT profile (and probably map to seek next/prev). I just didn't think the hassle was worth it, but it's definitely doable

Using Tasker and Secure Settings + Helper
You create 2 profiles
  • If power source any then Screen Wake
  • If not power source any then Screen Off
Mind chiming in on the exact logic you used? Or are these the identical conditionals you have?

But if say you turn the car off, and dont return to the car in 7 days? By that point the battery of the Nexus would have died.

So once you start your car again, the only screen it will stay on is the "charging" screen. It will not boot up. So a Kernel patch needs to be done on the Nexus 7 to force the Nexus to boot up instead of hovering on that charging screen.

Someone has already started a hunt for the answer here.

I took the liberty of rebuilding a test kernel with a few edits to the
init.rc step. Damn kernel takes a while to compile on my slow pc.

Nice work man, any chance you could draw a schematic for the wires. That would help big-time in wiring the thing

All the wiring is pretty much available from ae64

Some thing to note, if you have the OEM Kenwood Navi - like I do... This means you have a 14pin connecter AND a 24pin connector.

So ae64 needs to make a special harness for the 24pin connector to be able to get the steering wheel controls.

Otherwise ae64.com has all the wiring and pin locations available. Based on the picture he provided with the monster harness he made it is pretty easy to tell what overlaps with what.

Yup, I'm on that thread. Trying to see if I can figure out the kernel mods needed. No luck so far.

This thread has caused me to get my own ASUS Nexus 7 32GB as of yesterday. So far on the tablet, I have:

1.) Installed FoxFi on my Droid Bionic, and successfully connected to the Bionic from the Nexus 7. I tried doing the built in BT tethering, but it didn't work like I wanted. Anytime I went out of range with my cell phone and then came back, the checkbox on the Nexus 7 for "use this for internet connection" did not come back on. I need this thing solid, so I spent the $6.97 for FoxFi after testing it out here in my office and getting 103ms/5974kbps down/3967kbps up

2.) Installed Tablet Talk and got a connection over the WiFi hotspot being provided by FoxFi working just fine. Tested from my Google Voice number to my cell phone number, worked like a charm

3.) Downloaded the iHeartRadio and TuneIn apps for radio streaming to head unit

4.) Downloaded the rest of my Android Apps that I use frequently

I have a question though. On the Nexus 7, there's not a separate AC charging port and USB interfaces, so the USB interface is the charging interface. I was holing to use a UTG adapter and hook up an external hard drive (32GB doesn't really cut it for me) but I may be SOL here. Does anyone know or can anyone think of a way to charge the Nexus 7 and also use a UTG adapter? Would a Y-Cable work here or is that unlikely to function correctly?

Micro USB OTG adapter (female standard USB port) > y-cable (male to 2x female) > 2.1A charger (coming off of wiring harness) on one side, and then a USB hard drive on the other

thoughts? I need to narrow down a deck.

I purchased a usb extender, simply going to run a connection to an area I'd be easily capable of unhooking the usb power coming from the harness. Ghetto approach but a wire hidden under my steering wheel won't be an issue.

It'll come in handy when I need to flash roms and stuff. Or transfer music.

gotcha... so you're going from the harness to the USB port fron the charger (2.1A capable) over to an extension (male for the end that goes into the harness adapter, female on the other end) that hangs somewhere underneath your steering wheel for a disconnect so that you can plug in a USB drive to the regular USB male/micro-USB male cable feeding into the Nexus 7.

i need a bit more of a permanent solution while still charging. 32GB is simply not anywhere near enough space for my uses. hmmm

Whats interesting is that on my 2013, in comparing it to your replacement dash, I believe the 2013 models are actually shipping with the Japanese rudderized double DINs like what JDM is selling. mine looks identical to your new dash, and is rubberized. I guess I'll find out in a week or two once I nail down all of the parts and get them in. Nexus 7 is ready to roll.

Just gotta figure out that USB issue.

got a link to the 2.1A+ harness to USB adpater that you're using. All I can find at that spec are the cigarette lighter ones that I'd have to disassemble and put inside of a project box to keep from shorting it out.

I'm using something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Converter-Module-convert-output-adapter/dp/B008HZVH6G
That one is rated at 3A. The tricky part is finding one that can supply enough current to keep the tablet charged. Might have to try a few. I got one at Princess Auto which supplies a little over 1A but I'm waiting on a higher capacity one (similar to that one). Damn China shipping takes ages!
