No heat while engine is cold.
My car is a 2002 WRX Wagon.
I always have my heat on external circulation (you know that knob in your car you turn to select circulation from the inside vs. the outside). However, my car only heats up when the engine runs and becomes warm. This is all fine and well for the most part. As a test, I turned the knob for internal circulation and set the temperature to the highest possible setting. I did this while idle with the engine cold. There was no heat. Any ideas on what the problem might be? (Sorry, I'm a newb and don't know exact terminology.)

This is because 1- the air in the cabin is still cold so your just recirculating cold air. 2- The engine coolant is pump through the heater core and when the coolant is warm and air blows though the heater core, is when you get warm air. Now while the car is warming, you want turn to recirculate cabin air because you will be taking slightly warmer air (from the cabin) compared to outside the outside air temp back through the heater core and the cabin air will be heated faster. Once you are moving say down the highway you can switch to fresh air and turn off the fan and the air from outside will be forced through the heater core w/o any extra electrical load on the alternator. Hope this helps. If this is a Joke then God help you.

I could almost understand this not being a joke. I didn't know that the heat came from the engine until I was about 13 and watched a History channel special on the history of Cadillac. (God, I can't belive I remeber that and not how to divide fractions) |

Ok ok... My student worker, who was 18 at the time, didn't know how to release a set of vise grips. True story. Maybe that will make you feel a bit better.... |

some cars ARE coming with electrical heating systems now! (nothing suby makes, yet, at least...)
hybrid... no running engine=no heat, so early hybrids had to run the engine constantly for heat. some newer ones have electrical systems to at least supplement the heating. |

The drawback of electrical heating systems is that it's a much less efficent way to heat the cabin. I suppose the cars that do have them only use them for a short time until the coolant temperature is hot enough.
