ej20k spun bearing
So ya, I spun a bearing in my 20k...im assuming. I posted on rs25.com so i might as well post here too just in case anyone else wants to do some research. there are multiple assumptions as to why the bearing spun but thats the past and well...here is the new. I bought an ej257 shortblock with all the gaskets, seals, blah blah blah. so i disconnected everything from vacuum hoses to power steering lines from the 20k. i pulled the motor and well...for those of you that don't know, inside the transmission there is a fairly long cylinder shaped piece of metal that slides into the clutch fork that needs removing before you try pulling the motor out of the engine bay...i spent about an hr trying to figure out what the hell was binding so finally i called ecs and well, lets just say i should've done that 1st ;] anyhow, ive got the motor almost completely torn down minus the heads...gotta get a special star socket for them so anyhow, here are some pictures of what ive accomplished so far...anybody know of any GREAT east coast turbo porting/coating/cleaning shops? every dam place ive called its went straight to voicemail which is quite frustrating considering i could already have sent the turbo off...so anyhow, here are some pictures for you guys to check out
empty engine bay valves look, im fred flinstone! hehe...what the hell is up with that fogged up parking lamp??? buncha random bits, oh ya...i was just starting to bag everything up parts from which the random bits originated head w/o cams the engine at the end of the night, yes i know...crappy pic p.s. does anybody know the torque down specs of basically everything important? gotta find that out before i start assembling it back together after i get the heads back and the new ej257 block

interesting. What's happening with the EJ20k's???? I'm hearing a bit about them and also the 02-03 2.0L's spinning rod bearings.
A lot of work! Saves ya a lot of $$$ taking the motor out yourself. Gotta love the sliding pin for the clutch fork, eh? lolz So you're not going to rebuild the EJ20K? I would at least recommend getting pistons for the EJ257. Only think I don't like about the EJ257 is the machine trim on the outside cylinder walls. It's trimmed to clear the washer for the HALF-BLOCK bolts. This is a weak spot of ALL the EJ25's. All the lower displacement EJ-series don't have this; anything EJ22 and less. The head bolts are the MOST important one for torque specs. 21ft lbs in a a-f sequence. 51ft lbs in a-f sequence. Loosen 180* a-f sequence and another 180*. Then tighten middle TWO to 25ft lbs, outters to 11ft lbs, then 80-90* turn in a-f sequence, then another 80-90* turn making sure you don't go over 90*. ..........Cylinder Header.......... Front--------------------Rear IN-CAM GEAR - C - - A - - F EX-CAM GEAR - E - - B - - D Water pump and oil pump torque specs are 7lbs, VERY LIGHT. Oil pan are 4lbs? Timing belt covers are 3lbs? Pulleys are 25lbs and some are 36lbs? |

Figured it out though. I decided to go a route different than everyone else and rebuild my 20k. I pick up my crank and rods tom and my ACL Race bearings showed up today. If there are any bolt specs your after I have a few PDF files I got from another member that might help you out. Let me know -Derek |

well, an fp green costs at least 800 right? i have no idea how much they cost but it can't be any cheaper than re-using my vf22 with porting/coating/and just making sure the thing is still in tact, it will spool as fast as any stock turbo "im guessing" b/c of the port and the .5 more liters...this is the biggest IHI series turbo that makes 320whp on a 2.0, so hopefully i can get more than that ;] we will see though within a couple of weeks of me putting everything back together and getting it fully tuned for stock boost, im starting at 8psi and going to stock, hoping to clear more hp than expected, i doubt ill see 350 on stock boost though ;] stay tuned...

The VF22 is not capable of 320 WHP on any decent dyno especially with a 2 liter. A dyno jet, sure, but not any dyno dynamics etc. Yes you can get a used FP Green for $800 normally. If you get the 2.4" inlet it is plug and play in your car. The VF22 could be sold right now for close to $400 maybe a bit less. Which there is no way that the DB P&P is going to be under $400. The FP Green is a much more capable proven power turbo. The VF22 is great if you have no other options.

Did they disassemble your 22 and tell you that? My 20K that spun a bearing didn't mess up my VF23.

That sucks. Did it free spin before you sent it? I have a VF22 I just emailed them about. It sucks that IHI are such turds about rebuild kits.

There are V3/4 Silicon Inlet hoses all over ebay for under $100. Pick up one of these. I was just making sure you knew that you couldn't use a new age inlet and the opening was 2.4".
