Mods and Private Sellers/Buyers..Please Read.
Im not selling anything..move this if it must be moved.
I cant believe how many scams take place here. Im currently reading the possible scam by Inception. RonF, 1688 and soggynoodles, I hope everything works out for you guys.. Why have we not started using heatware yet? It is a trader/seller feedback system. Its very easy to setup an acct. and everything is free. This would give us atleast a starting point when dealing with a seller. Alot of other For Sale forums use heatware so some cross reference feedbacks would probably pop up..For instance, I have some heatware feedback for buying and selling some stuff at Anandtech.com. You could use that as a basis for dealing with me. Its just a thought but I think it would be a good step in setting up a more trustworthy selling system. Other than that maybe it would be a good idea to setup the Private For Sale forum regionally so selling and buying could be done locally alot more easily. www.heatware.com

I think this version of vBulletin comes with a trader rating built in and everything. I know we have one on i-club. I personally try to buy things from locals only and I meet with them in person to do business. I purchased one thing from a guy in Pennsylvania, but it was a hard to find part and he was a good guy. I hope Inception gets hit by a bus or something. He sucks.

The vbulletin trader rating system is pretty worthless as it can be easily manipulated.
Scams on boards of this size are a reality. Buy smart, if something seams to good to be true it probably is. Do research on your seller by searching the forum for recent transactions. Try and stick with locals. If you leary, use escrow.com Jay |

I have a buy sell list i keep that has names of people I bought from and what the item was and vise versa . I have been scammed before so I try to search the sellers name , Number of posts , and location . When I used to own my integra and was always on team-integra .net it was cool because we had a buyer/seller rating . But people just have to be very careful with large purchases . I too think its pathetic with the number of user names in the scam sticky but reality is the world is full of arseholes .

I havent gotten scammed yet. Bought a swaybar for $20 + shipping, Wiper stalk w/ trunklight stuff for another $25. Couple of other REALLY good deals and have not gotten scammed.
You dont hear about the hundreds of sales that go down well, you only hear about the 5 or 10 that go down bad. |

As Jay has already explained, the user/seller rating systems are just not effective enough.
Ex: Someone thinks they are scammed because they are impatient, gets all his friends to register and rate a seller poorly, etc.. etc.. It won't prevent the "scam" that is taking place. And I have seen folks here (multiple folks in one thread, just paypal a guy for something w/o getting any contact from him. Then, when the seller accepts the funds and never responds they all realize they paypaled him for the same item. It blows my mind how trusting some folks can be on here. Don't get me wrong, I was burned once on here for $650, and now I know better. I would love to make things easier and safer here. I probably spend more time on here than anyone trying to help out with poor transactions and keep a history for others. Unfortunately I can't make people do research before a purchase. Heck, I wanted this classified forum to only be an actual ad, just like in a newspaper or craigslist. Half of the scams we have here are by folks who are difficult to get in touch with and provide little info. If a seller had to post an ad and provide a phone number or e-mail in the ad, I figure a potential buyer who can't seem to get in touch with the guy would have some sort of clue to not continue seeking out a transaction. These sort of "lets make it better" schemed have been discussed more than a few times here. We just haven't found a better way. I'd love it if we could get escrow.com to sponsor the forum and actually provide the service at a discount. It just isn't something I can implement or force folks to use. Quote:
I only deal with local people, and I always questions a "too good to be true price". I also never use paypal, because they are completely useless at getting you a refund. I'm going to make this thread a sticky, and I'd love to hear about others experiences on different forums and any other ideas you might have. You don't really need to convince me. It just seems whenever an idea comes up there are a few road blocks on the technical side of things with the server, etc. and things just can't work out. Paul G. |

Paul, I was thinking of something earlier regarding www.escrow.com. I wonder if there is a way that NASIOC and escrow could offer the service together. It would be great to see something in the private for sale that you want to buy and their is a link to escrow.com. Maybe we could make it mandatory for sellers to state in their for sale thread that they do or do not accept escrow.com.
Just a thought.. |

But,,,,how to treat the actual "perps" of these scams.....Keep in mind they don't care dick about you, you're money, or your family..
this is what pisses people off the most...just knowing that those perps took you, and left you in the gutter with your dick hanging out... At lot of people threaten, but come on, do ANY of you have the balls to follow through? Are you tough enough to stand up? Or is it all talk... or how about the hack meisters on here? Surely,if a situation gets out of control, there leaves no option but to disable the perp severely(via his system) and make him think twice on his past deeds These rip off artists or ****** punks who are doing this need to get spanked bad! by one of any means. Don't let 'em know what's coming, don't threaten, just SHUT IT DOWN sponsored by NASIOC for Christ Last edited by silvercharged; 02-25-2005 at 09:28 PM. Reason: spelling |

The forum so far has treated me very well but i made sure that i did alot of research on the person before i sent any money so far hasn't been any problems and i have bought alot of stuff from here. (intercooler, prodrive p1,vf22&sti pinks, tein coilovers, and my UTEC)so for the must part if you do your background work on the seller you should be fine, and for the ones that have gotten scammed maybe you should find someone in that area to take care of those punks! Scammers suck!

I can vouch for heatware. I use heatware quite a bit trading on computer forums (anandtech, hardocp). Its been very good to me and I've been using it for years (you can search "ai42" and find my heatware).
Of course if you trade with me I litterally have over 300 feedbacks between ebay/heatware/beerology. As well as over 300 on PayPal. |

I usually do not jump in on threads like this but I must disagree with the moderators on this...unless there are other points that were not made.
I believe that a rating system would be helpful...with the understanding that IT IS ALWAYS BUYER BEWARE. People that are "professional" scammers can always dupe the system, but it would make one more hurdle. And the run of the mill scammers always go for the lowest hanging fruit and IMHO aren't going to take the time to "fool" the rating system. And if you have rating of 0, oh well you have a rating of 0 and need to convince people you are trustworthy to buy from. For what it is worth, I always check previous posts from people I buy from and see what they have to contribute to the forum. And sometimes I even leave feedback on the post where I bought an item from. So I would have a few ratings as would other people. And NASIOC is larger than i-club (and better because of it IMHO), which would allow for a more reliable rating system...in as much as it can be reliable. Perhaps a sticky poll from the electorate might be helpful in thinking about such a matter. I certainly believe that a sticky discussion of this matter in the classifieds is a reasonable idea (even though there will be lots of dumb comments among the good)..knowledge with the masses...power to the people...don't trust a blind skunk with an axe...etc. Regards, Justin Wade 2004 FXT |

I always hear everyone saying this quote but I would have to say thats the most idiotic quote ever. I'm not saying you're an idiot or saying anything bad about you.. but if you think about what the quote is saying, then you'll see that if I were trying to scam someone on here, I'd post a reasonable price and just collect everyone's money and actually make MORE money than if I would have posted a lower price to start with. like, lets say... STi Pinks (which I dont have) I post them for sale for lets say $250 shipped, I accept everyone's offers and collect the money and dissapear.. instead of starting off with a $100 shipped price. See what I'm sayign or no? The price really has nothing to do with the fact that you're getting scammed, the scammer could be asking reasonable prices for an item he doesnt have and still get the money because his askign price isnt "too good to be true" when in reality you're still getting scammed. -alan |

That makes sense, with the whole price thing.
I figure it is a gamble every time I buy something. I have yet to buy expensive items, a set of Sparco clubmen's was the most expensive thing I have purchased and it went fine. You got to pay to play, sometimes more than others. |

I know that some forums require you to list your state in the private classifieds, (i-club?) - no state = deleted thread - what if we adopted a similar policy here (maybe include hometown etc)
While caveat emptor certainly still applies, the amount of scamming supposedly happening in this forum perhaps necessitates some sort of change... |

I dont quite understand the State inthe title thing, but I'm a big advocate of HEATWARE. regardless of how easily it can be "Manipulated" it can give someone additional information onthe seller/buyer. Its used quite successfuly on the PC For Sale boards and those guys are notorious for scamming.
