Switched Power
While installing the Radar Detector I found an easy source for switched power. I'll eventually do a page but it's pretty simple. Remove the inside fuse box cover and there is a blank (empty) fuse holder (next to 20 I think but don't hold me to that yet) I probed the top pin an got switched power. To the right behind a yellow harness plug is a nut to use as a ground. I ran the wire up the left side of the dash and tucked the wire in at the base of the windscreen to hide it and came out at the center. Just like I had it in the OB. Works fine. Pics to follow soon.
FWIW there is no easy way to use a cig lighter /power port wire for a detector, the outlets are just too far away. I considered tapping into the auto dim mirror but did not see a good place to mount the detector up there.

Great, came up with the same idea while waiting 2 hours on Saturday for proof of insurance for my third Subaru - 5 pass Tribeca ltd. Had done the same thing for my 03 gt.

Too cold to do a totally finished install of my radar detector, but it is hooked up as you suggested. I was frustrated by the grounding method you used, screw did not want to cooperate and the cold. Temp grounded to a screw holding a plastic cover under the drivers seat.
Curious how you handled the wire... did you go down the A piilar or? Thanks, I appreciate your efforts. |

Just re-read your original post. You have your detector mounted low on the winshield, mine is high. The Valentine One has a rear antenna and must be mounted so it can see out the back window. So this puts me first as doing this type of wiring.

Peaty,
Any thoughts on getting the switched power to the passenger side? Any research on tapping an always on circuit? Those mini fuses don't seem to allow any sharing. The full size version of those fuses have a tap made by one of the fuse companies. |

I haven't checked the other side yet. The only always on wires usually go to the dome lights. You could try to pick up the wire up at the headliner and run it down to where you need. I took a quick look above the passenger foot well and it seems they put a cover under there so you can't really poke around w/o removing it

Couple of follow-ups.
Getting switched power to the passenger side. I used a long nylon wire tie to snake under the console just above the shifter. The rest of it was easy. Littelfuse has a mini sized "Add-A-Circuit" that is a lot easier to use than trimming down a spade lug to fit. I feel more comfortable about it because it sure does stick in there. Just use the top slot on the adapter so there is no connection across the cars circuit. Getting the wiring up to the top of the windshield. My auto body guy showed me how to do it. The A pillars have covers over the side curtain air bags. There is a single screw behind the oval shaped piece near the top of the pillar. Wiggle the pillar cover off. (IGNITION OFF) Thread any wiring behind the winshield washer fluid line to make sure there is no interference to the cover or bag. There is a cover on the side of the dashboard that allows access to inside the dash. Easier to take off if you push on it from the inside by putting your hand through the fuse opening. Once open getting the wires down to the fuse box is simple. |

Guys,
Just got a '07 7 pass Limited w/auto-dim mirror. I want to hard-wire my Valentine One. Is it ok to tap the wire going to the mirror? Details please, if possible - I'm not an electrician... |

Then follow the insructions on running the wire up the A pillar. Remember Valentine uses phone wire between either the hard wire adapter or the lighter adapter. You won't have any place near the mirror for that. These instructions result in a direct connection between the fuse box and whatever device you hook up. You don't want to add a device to another circuit such as the mirror. Good luck. |
