I thought we'd moved past the "its normal and/or ok for a new car to have defective rings".

So you ran a compression test?

Doing a compression test is not an all inclusive determination of why an engine is or isn't using oil. My wife's passed compression test (performed by our dealer...sorry I don't have the numbers) yet still had used 1 quart in 850 miles and another quart 650 miles after that and the compression test was "good".
A compression test indicates how well the compression rings are sealing (on the compression stroke), not the oil control ring. I feel your pain 79, only advice I can offer is have a dealer do an oil consumption test. That's all we had to do for my Wife's car. Yes inconvenient to have to take it to the dealer every 1000-1200 miles (or in our case when the low oil level light came on). SOA isn't going to do anything until they have the data. |

Go to dealer.
Ask for new consumption test. Do not leave dealership personnel alone with car. Watch tech add 5.3 quarts. Come back later. Am I missing something? |

Ask the dealer what GTP is for your car? Then get a WRX? If the oil consumption is "acceptable" then it shouldn't change the GTP, right? |

But yeah, I agree, just do the consumption test. 79 has done his own oil change, he knows what full looks like on the dipstick. Just let them do it, and check the oil afterwards. I'd check afterwards even if I wasn't doing a consumption test considering the people they usually have doing oil changes at dealerships. It sucks that you have let someone else work on your car to get this test done, but it's the only way anything will get fixed under warranty. |

Maybe Rexy's shop will allow 79 to watch, considering how they botched the last one and all.

Theyre nice enough folks over there. Next time I'll just make sure I get to watch.
Last time i DID mention that I wanted to quadruple-check that 5.3 quarts of Subaru branded 0w20 be used. |

Good suggestion, but after hundreds of readings i have gotten good at reading the dipstick.

79 I would go to the dealer when Rexy is around. Perhaps she can ensure you'll get good service. Get the consumption test done!

The goal here is to perform a scientific, indisputable test so that you and the tech won't be arguing over an oily strip of metal. It's very simple. Get the dealer to accept these terms: 1. The dealer will at no time have unsupervised access to the engine bay. You will only leave the car when the hood is closed, doors are locked and keys are in your pocket. 2. 5.3 MEASURED quarts of oil will go into the engine after it is drained. Bring your own clear quart like I mentioned earlier. 3. You will not check or add oil. 4. After X miles, you will return to the dealership for the test. 5. Oil will be drained into a container that you will inspect. 6. The quantity of oil will be MEASURED in your presence. Bring that quart again. 7. A dipstick reading will not be used for testing. This is not complicated. I've done it myself to produce very accurate consumption numbers. We have the technology. Get Rexy to agree, and get it done. Well I can make suggestions, AS I DID AT THE LAST ATTEMPT, but Subaru has its own policies and procedures for the test. Even when done properly, its not really 100% scientific.
I really gotta make sure its burning "enough". I dont wanna waste anyones time. |

Its got 1320 miles on the current fill. I'll check it in a few hours or in the morning.

[quote=Commander Keen;38953728]79, this is not about your ability to read the dipstick. We both know the dipstick reads high, and this could cost you a new short block when you come back to have consumption measured. Do not give the dealer an inch on this one.
Exactly! Thats what my last try ended up with lol AN INCH (above full). But I think this next test should go MUCH better. I'm going to call well ahead, show up early (with donuts), and be patient yet insistent upon the scientific nature of the testing. |

Also, take pictures of the dipstick every time when you are at the dealership for the OC test. Not to say the dealer will pull anything, but I am all for keeping records of everything.

Thats why I have a scibed mark over an inch above the full mark.
And one 5/8" above where, in the techs words, " it was drained to the correct amount". As for the suggestions, thanks. I just have to remember not to DEMAND anything. I have to let the staff at whatever dealer I go to do whatever they do in the end. I WILL try to keep any anomalies or mistaked ftom happening. But I was very communicative last attempt, and there shouldnt have been a huge breakdown in communication. That certainly wasnt on my account. I'm hoping/thinking that "third times a charm". Although after all this time optimism is wearing pretty thin. But things are looking a WHOLE lot better'n six months ago. |

yeah... i burned 1qt per 2000 mi in my 11 Forester. I know it sucks to have to check and fill it up. But, that's life, you will never get what you always want. |

havent checked in here in a while. Glad to see that Subaru is doing something about some cars.
My red oil light is still illuminated off and on. I just tell anyone who drives it to ignore the red oil light. The amber light has been off since adding oil and has not returned. I am currently at 14,995 miles. I stopped at the dealer and there was a two hour wait for an oil change, and I said no thanks. I did call SOA and let them know that both of my oil lights were on and to please document that I called. Since they are replacing engines now, does that mean that they have actually acknowledged that there is a problem with some cars? |
