Default OT: Best place in the Mid-A for an Engagement Ring?

I was wondering what people thought was the Best place in the Mid-A for an Engagement Ring?
I live in Richmond but would travel to the Baltimore or DC area.

We have started to look at the jewelry stores in the mall but they are either very expensive (Schwartzchild) or the cheaper stores have low rated diamonds (I2) in the rings.

We looked at the jewleryexchange in Bethesda online but the rings in my price range have lower quality diamonds.

I would be looking to spend under $5000 but hopefully more like $3000-$3500.

So any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks

Brian

If you do get "Married" there is no law saying you have to involve the state(a marriage license) to get married, it's a scam to get $$ out of you and should you get divorced, A WHOLE LOT MORE $$!!

can never go wrong with tiffany's

their settings are seriously much better than anything in their price class. you may feel like you are overpaying for the diamond you get; but a larger diamond in a lesser setting is not as attractive as a smaller diamond in a great setting (at least to me and my wife). plus, they offer better customer service + later you have the option to return the original ring for its original value to put towards a bigger ring (like for anniversaries and stuff)

i ended up getting my wedding band there too because they were surprisingly cheaper on their platinum bands than everywhere else.

I bought mine at Costco of all places. Not a big selection but if you find one you like the price is right.

Since you say "we have started looking" I'll assume she is goign with you. In that case I suggest looking for not just an engagement ring but a wedding set (where the wedding ring matches the engagement ring). Unless of course you've enjoyed going to every jewlrey store in town and want to do it twice.

Another option to consider is to visit pawn shops. Now most women will not want a second hand ring but would accept a second hand diamond. If you budget allows you to buy a 1ct diamond in most jewlrey shops you may be able to get a 1.5ct in a pawn shop.... Remove the diamond from the ring, sell the gold, and shop for a new setting. If it means getting a bigger diamond most girls are ok with this option. The downside to this is that you may not get a certificate with your diamond and it could be difficult to accurately appriase the diamond before purchasing it.

Good luck.

eta; I hear radio advertisements for this store alot

but other problems about not having a marriage recognized by the state:

1.) emergency medical decisions
2.) if you ever get your taxes audited and you file as married, expect to assume the position when the auditor comes knocking on your door.
3.) long term (should you never get divorced) problems of estates should one of you pass

I bought from Washington Diamond. They are in Falls Church.

http://www.washingtondiamond.com/

The wife wanted a very specific setting from there.

Overall, it was painless and they have been great to work with even afterward for inspection and cleaning.

I have a neighbor that's a jeweler. He has a shop in Occoquan. I know he could get you anything you want, and might give a discount. I can put in the good word if you want.

+1 - same scenario, same result. Walter is the guy to work with. He had an RS-T before there was a NASIOC or an i-Club. (Still has a model of it behind his desk)

I would buy the diamond online or at Costco though, and for the love of god, don't go to Jared's or any of those other shameless ripoff places.

Costco and online places like bluenile.com are awesome to get loose stones.

I just like the convenience of having a local shop to work with for the setting and for the care and maintenance afterward.

So you can buy your loose stone somewhere and then take it to a local jeweler to get it set.

^^^ This. I bought my diamond off bluenile or something like it (can't remember) and took it to WD for the setting. So, no, I did mean "would"

Hopefully he will marry someone who means a lot more to him than a GT35R

Seriously? Shop around at some of the big stores, then talk to a custom jeweler about having one made. We did that for my wife's wedding band; cost about half of what one would've been in the stores. And it's better quality. And appraised for much more than what we paid.

And......... nobody else has one. Anywhere.

A family member owns and runs this. It's where I got my wife's custom ring. They have excellent reviews, and incredible service and advice. Not cheap though:

http://www.igorman.com

$5000 goes FAST when looking at rings I cringe when I think about how much I've spent on rings in the last year or so. I just got married. Good luck!
