Default From STi to BRZ?

Anyone go from an STi (any version) to the BRZ?? I had to sell my STi a few years ago and have been debating what to buy next. SOOOO many cars out now in this price range with more power and lux, but I've always like the idea of going back to a FWD motor and RWD drive train. The only thing really holding me back is lack of power!

Explain please

LOL Yeah sorry. I meant motor on front axle and powering the rear wheels. I had a few "adult" drinks before posting.

For the price tag of these there's so many choices, but I like the overall package of the BRZ minus the power.

There is more power than you would think. Remember the car is fairly close in power/weight ratio to the Bugeye.

With the auto it had plenty of get up and go around town here when I test drove.

Yeah figured that's what you meant

IMO it depends on what you prefer. If you like a much more engaging drive then the BRZ will be great.

Personally I have a ~400 whp STi and a bone stock 02 s2000 and the s is so much more of a drivers car with far superior handling that I actually prefer to drive it and don't miss the power that often. From everything I've read the BRZ is close to on par with an s2000 with marginally less hp/lb.

If doing hignway/ drag pulls is your thing then you may be disapointed by the BRZ.

I went from a sti to a brz. My biggest complaint with the STI (08' stage 2+) was that you never really got more than 2-5 seconds at WOT before you were going way too fast. It honestly felt like I could never use all the power or grip. It was a fun car in the twisties too but you had to push it so hard to get there. For better or for worse, the BRZ does not have this problem. It does not feel like I'm going slow everywhere like my STI did. Does that make sense?

^^ I get it. It's part of the reason I sold my R6. Didn't really feel "fast" until almost triple digits. And that's not only illegal but its just plain stupid.

Also a buddy of mine traded his 135i in for a 2011 WRX because after the test drive he said " I know it's slower but I can use the power more frequently without breaking the law, it's just more fun around town."

I'm selling mine. I LOVED my sti, but since it's back to stock, I think I wont miss it as much. I like the idea of a driver's car with no gimmicks. And a better ride and better gas mileage. And just look at it!

The BRZ is quick but for a while I do think you're going to be slamming your back into the seat in cartoonish anticipation every time you plant the throttle.

I used to have a 400+ HP evo 8 (which i sold 2 years ago) and my 02 s2000. I typically caught myself driving the s2000 more. The evo was fun and fast, but the s2000 was fun on a whole different level. After reading the reviews of the BRZ I've thought about trading up the s2000 once the demand goes down on the BRZ. It looks like a very promising car!

Man, the GR looks like a minivan in that cool lineup. It's weird to think about but I owned all those cars. 04 sti -> 08 sti -> 13 brz.

I would do it. My 04 STi wasn't that fun to drive -- the traditional Subaru design places the engine way too far foward, which results in a car that wants to rip the wheel out of your hands and go straight anytime you want to turn (I'm not refering to understeer, I'm refering to sub-limit handling). Certainly the numbers for the STi are better all around, but who cares if all you're doing is fighting a numb steering wheel. Honest to goodness my Honda Ridgeline has more steering feel than my 04 STi did.

I can't do it because my wagon can do so much more. I do not see roof racks with john boats, kayaks, skis, mountain bikes and other stuff on the BRZ. Thats why I need a wagon. I had a 6 foot blue spruce out the back of my wagon and that thing had a huge root ball. But as a second car....

You guys are delusional if you think the 04 is inferior to the rest!!!! I LOVED my 04 over all other STi's!! From 05+ are just padded, weighted, and more driver/commuter friendly! :P

Having driven both the 04 and 05 in anger the 05 is superior in every way. Better steering feel, beefier wheel bearings, better seats, better steering wheel, better wheels, and better front diff

I concur with Industrial. I went from 05 WRX > 10 STi > BRZ. The STi was a blast, but just like he said, you can't use the power without getting yourself in trouble. When it feels fast, you're going really fast. The BRZ feels faster at slower speeds. You don't have to get crazy to enjoy it.

Something I didn't realize at first and now I'm a little bummed...no place for a roof rack, unless you get the kind that clamp on the edges, and I don't know if those are available yet. Guess I won't be taking my bike out any time soon.

Test drove a FR-S Auto. I wont be trading in my WRX any time soon. I wanna try a manual. I was able to push the car as much as I wanted, they even made me go find an empty lot to drift and trash it as much as I wanted (poor car only had 29 miles on it) Its no where near the performance of the WRX so I cant imagine compared to a STi. Sure at the track it'd be sweet. But for day to day driving...no thanks. I am not sold yet, maybe if they come out with a Turbo version. Scion says its in the works.

Put it in the trunk with the seats folded down?

that's exactly how I feel about my car and the fact that its 5 speed makes it worse because once you let off because you are going to fast its harder to going again. I find my bro's 138hp MR2 spyder more fun to drive than my WRX but I would miss the power and practicality

I just picked up my BRZ last night! I'm loving it. Doesn't have the same power as the STI of course, but I love the way the car drives.
