....but I guess I could consider a 55r (maybe)

I also think a performance winter/snow tire would fit my area's needs for winter driving.

Edit:
ONLY 195/50-16 on tirerack: Pirelli Winter Snowsport

ONLY 205/50-16 on tirerack: Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3

Both will cost me over $600, wtf......
I have a 96 impreza outback 5 spd and I have the 98 rs gold 5 spoke wheels with 205/50R16 winter i pike studded tires and at the time that is the size I found. If I was buying now I would go with a 55 series tire over the 50. I would try to get a 205/55R16, but 215/55R16 might work as well I might try this size down the road

I think you could risk insurance denial in some cases. Per the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, you cannot ride around with the TPMS light on. Check out the new clarification by the NHTSA

Edit: I could understand if you disagreed with my second statement. Not only does a light come on, it potentially causes a safety risk to those who do not understand how to check the pressure in their vehicle's tires regularly.

I think you took that quote out of the wrong context. They're saying that the law doesnt require a shop to repair a car that comes in with the TPMS illuminated.

Disabling the TPMS, including using winter tires without TPMS, violates 49 USC 30122. Whether a shop puts the tires on or you, I think it's a violation. Maybe we have some JD's on here that can give us some insight what the law actually is.

For what it's worth it looks like Congressman Markey (democrat from Massachusetts) is the one who sponsored this TPMS Mandate in the Tread Act.

That is correct. If the car comes on with no TPMS light and while here it comes on we must be able to get it to go off. The car cannot leave that way. We can also not disable the system or install tires/wheels knowing the TPMS has been disabled

The first link states an example of a service provider installing wheel/tires knowing that the system is disabled prior to the vehicle arriving and goes on to say it's perfectly legal.

He's saying a shop cant let a car go out with a light on if it came in with the light off. If the car comes in with the light on, a shop can let the car go out with the light on (providing he doesn't disable any other part of the system).

Whether or not it's you self performing the work in your own garage or having a shop do the work, I dont think it makes a difference in the eyes of these provisions.

Pittsburgh winters have been light recently or have good road clearing. Used WinterSport 3D's on a previous FWD car with no problems. Hesitant about the Altimax's because they're not performance winters. In the snow I'm sure they're better but I don't want the car to turn into a marshmallow when the roads are dry and clean.

People seem to have a lot of good things to say about the Dunlops. Plenty of positive feedback on Tirerack..

My brother in law wears the General Altimax Arctics in the wintertime. They do perform well, but seem to wear pretty quickly compared to other winter treads that I've used...

I'll throw kudos to the Wintersport 3D's too. My Volvo was nearly useless with AS's in the snow and those tires made it like a little tank. I do 110 miles a day round trip and they kicked arse in all conditions. There were a few nights coming home that I was one of the very few cars moving at all. I was passing all sorts of AWD cars that could hardly go on the flats and used stuck cars like slalom gates on the uphills. One night in particular will stand out for me forever, it was sleeting so hard it piled up nearly 4" deep on the highway and I just rolled along at 35 mph like it was nothing and I only had 4.5" of clearance.

The only downside to them is they wear super fast over about 45 degrees.

tires only or winter package: either or

I've been researching for weeks but still can't decide what to do. I do pretty much all city driving and they are pretty good about plowing eventually, we do get some really bad storms but it can be a blizzard one day and 50 degrees out the next. I'm most worried about getting to work in the morning on the highway.

Thinking of 235/45/17 either Dunlop Winter Sport 3D or Continental Extreme Winter Contact most likely mounted on stock rims but thinking of ordering from Tire Rack with a cheap set of 17s mounted and balanced. Any other tires I should be considering? 16s with steelies are an option but it's going to suck when it's a nice day out and roads are clear I know.

Also what is the typical tread life of a performance winter versus say Artimax or Blizzak WS70? I hope to get at least 3-4 years out of them, only drive about 1,000 miles a month.

When I was living in Cleveland I used Michelin X-Ice2s with great success.

Never got stuck, managed to negotiate the interstates without any issues, handled the ice/black ice/snow etc just fine.

No significant wear on 'warmer' days on the interstate after 2 years of use, and probably 20k miles.

Bought them for my in-laws and my SO as well.

Are your summer tires showing abnormal wear. How many miles on car? Have you hit any obstacles?

Opinions on these? I read some mixed reviews. I only ask because a local tire place will give me basically a "buy 3 get one free" deal.

No one replied to my last post so I'll try again.

I have a 2012 WRX Sedan, stock rims, live in Michigan which can have some pretty harsh winters but we're pretty good at plowing the roads.. usually.

I was looking at Blizzaks and some Michelin's but I'm not really looking to spend close to $1,000 for a set of winter tires... Looking for something a bit cheaper that will fit the Michgan winter needs. Any help would be great... So far I called a local Discount Tire store and they have the Blizzaks for $910 (no way) or Cooper Weathermaster for $690. Never heard of the Cooper brand and both seem expensive as S#$t.

Any help for a first time winter WRX driver would be great lol.

Look to pick up a pair of 06/07 wheels and run a narrower tire. I run a 215 on 06 wheels on my 2011 and it drives awesome.

Connecticut (where I am) can have some harsh Winters too, but like your area, they're usually pretty good about plowing so I got cheap Winter tires. $375 shipped for some Chinese brand Winter tires from tires-easy.com

I put them on my stock wheels since I have dedicated Summer wheels/tires. Totally worth it rather than spending the crazy amounts some of these guys spend.
