Its the accelerating that really kills mpg esp in awd.

I dont really limit my highway speed, I actually find myself trying to go as fast as i can ... as long as the needle stays positive. So Ill accelerate to maybe 55 or something fast enough where i can enter traffic easily and then go from there.

Well now that you said that im going to have to try drafting more. haha. i assumed it would only work at close range.
i think the 2012 impreza delivers excellent highway mileage if one can keep it below 65mph...i think if you were regularly cruising at 70-75mph, you wouldn't be able to maintain your 40's for the MPG...but in the 55-60 range, i'm guessing this car can get over 45 MPG with a steady foot and what you suggest is your driving habit.

^ Yeah sounds accurate. My numbers are only in summer months as well. I hope winter wont kill my mpgs too much.

Besides calculation errors, isnt it a good thing if the odometer is slightly under actual values??? Warranties will last a little longer and mpgs are more modest than optimistic.

It was only 80 here this morning and raining. Had windows open and no AC. Computer showed almost 40. That is the highest I have ever seen on my morning commute.

There is even already “SPORT” indicator on the dashboard that lights up briefly on start-up but not otherwise utilized.

I used mile markers on a road trip for 62 miles. Odo said 60.4. 2.58%?
Gps said 71 mph when speedo said 70.
I've driven worse.

Default New record for our 14k mi CVT -39mph 260mi Hiway trip

This car did an amazing economy run today. Before today's details, let me share results from a trip NJ - NC and back.

Way down, first full tank, 36.6 computer, 35.5 calculated. This tank included some around town and the computer mph was 56. Kept speed around 62 on highway- seemed mpg would take a full 3 hit at 70mph. AC was more off than on through an early morning run. Full tank on the way back, only 32.3 and 34.1 with mph on computer of 51 and 48, respectively. More AC on those runs but I don't think that explains all the difference.

Today, 256 miles from the edge of Cape Cod, MA back to Northern NJ. 39.9 computer/est. cacluated 39. (with only 6-7 gallons to take on, the stop point can really shift the results. It took 6.5gal at the pump stop) Took the more hilly (avoid 95 traffic) inland route via 495/Mass Pike/84/91. We still hit bad traffic in spots- over an hour's worth- with one couple mile food hunting stop and with the effect of traffic, avg mph was 49. Cruised at around 61mph when I could. I think cruise control does a good job- I started aiding it only by picking up some extra speed going down hill. Zero drafting opportunities. I think the traffic cost 1.5-2mpg. I'd say the hilly route vs. 95 worth 1mpg. Our trip up 95 on Friday night was through bad traffic and only yielded around 32mpg, still keeping speed limited when traffic freed up.

The only thing I can attribute today's results to - temperature. It allowed limitied AC use (20-25% of time?) but I think more significantly it just seems this car's efficiency sweet spot is with external temps in the 70s. The NC trip was more like in the 90s out. About 60 miles in the trip, the computer was holding at 42.6 peak for a bit. It dropped to 42/42.3 before the first 30 miles of traffic which by end left me ~40 on the computer.

Seems like there is huge difference in mpg when comparing city/highway numbers. Makes sense with awd eating gas at low speeds/traffic but 2.0L + cvt to save gas while cruising.

Anyone know of any gas saving mods or upgrades?

Currently testing theory of removing part of grille thats restricting air intake.

Wait, aren't you the forum member that gets crazy good gas mileage? If so, why would you change anything?

Drove from my house in Long Island to NYC and back. Averaged 42mph and 33.1MPG with CVT. Temp was about 75 degrees, AC was on. minimal stop and go. Car has 700 miles on it.

OK, explain this to me: How is it humanly possible to do any driving in the NYC/LI area without experiencing a lot of stop and go? Were you driving at 3 AM?

Tomorrow I'm driving my daughter from Rochester, NY to Stony Brook University on Long Island. I find the traffic in the NYC/LI area to be a complete crap shoot, with the emphasis on "crap".

I went into eastern queens at 6am and was back by 2pm. I took all highway until I reached my office (not far from the highway) Eastern queens is still considered NYC but is not "manhattan"

I frequently drive from the Utica area to Long Island. I would be interested to see what MPG you get going down 90 to 87 (if thats your route choice)

last fill up. 33.3mpg on the clock, calculated to 30.97. mixed driving with 418 miles on the tank. I'd say 70% highway. 2K miles on the car. It's getting better every fill up.

We'll be taking my wife's minivan, so I won't be able to give you Impreza data from this trip.

Well if it helps save gas, why not? plus the intake thing is easy to try and sounds like it would help, however, not noticing much difference.

I am thinking of just installing airplane wings or rooftop hang glider n try gliding to work?

... am i taking this too far?

I'm guessing you have the sedan? I can't get close to that on my Sport lmtd even 100% highway and practically no one on fuelly touches that. You must've gotten the golden egg

To be fair i was attempting to draft behind big rigs the entire way.

I even calculated 41 mpg after the refill

^^^ LOL. Not to say I don't believe him/her, but I've gotten my gauge up to 44+ before right after filling up & hopping right on the highway. Certainly didn't last long as soon as I hit ANY incline or stop. I can only imagine this is possible with a 500 mile 100% highway trip on flat ground with no stops. But hey, if you're getting it enjoy your golden egg.

I never checked average speed. probably high 40s or 50.

I try to cruise hwy around 62 mph on flat ground. Not exactly flying.

The PA turnpike is pretty hilly but i pretty much acc downhill and try to keep mpgs constant uphill. Like i said i was trying to draft which may have helped.

I pretty much stare at the mpg gauge the entire time too. lol

My current tank of gas is suddenly giving me ~10% boost on MPG, from 29 to 31.5.
No change in driving habits or pattern. What's surprising is that this gas is from Rotten Robbie. I wouldn't think this particular brand is superior. My previous results from 76, Valero, and Chevron all gave fairly consistent MPG.

This gas from Rotten Robbie was very noticeably better for MPG.

I don't know if I can attribute the change to the gas. I'm wondering if ECU of the impreza is picky and changes the ignition timing depending on gas.

I'm trying to log the ignition timing using OBD II scanner. What I see is that ~15% advanced timing most of the time. Although it seems to fluctuate quite it bit, and have seen it as high as 35 degrees and as low as -8 degrees.

Does anyone know what the base timing is for impreza?
I'm wondering if my ECU has been RETARDING my ignition because it didn't like the gas that I had before(knock sensor?).
Perhaps this Rotten Robbie gas is finally allowing my car to run with normal base timing, and therefor giving me better MPG.
I'm assuming that the ECU would not purpose run more advanced timing to gain HP/MPG. Either way, I'm hoping that I can log the ignition timing and be able conclude that the difference is really due to gas.

Doe any one have thoughts on this?

Was your AC on? I get 1-2 mpg worse with it on so I try to limit it. You have an auto cause it's a limited, correct?

It seems 60-65 is a good mpg speed. Once I hit 70+ it starts to decline for the manual.
