2002 WRX to 2005 STI motor swap. NEED HELP
Ok, i previously owned a ford mustang so i know relatively nothing about these cars. I bought a 2002 wrx with a blown motor for $3700, which i couldnt pass it up because i had driven a modded wrx b4 and had a blast, and bought a 2005 sti motor swap with all wires, ecu, ignition imobilizer, turbo, intercooler, the works. I dont really feel like swapping EVERY wire so was hoping someone could tell me what all 2002 wrx wire could stay and which ones need replaced. Would it be possible to plug in the STI ECU and ignition immobilizer and be done? Please go into detail with me. I have the EJ20 pulled and the new EJ257 sitting in the garage waiting for the car to be wired and ready for the motor. Anyone in the West Virginia area that could stop by and offer help would be greatly appreciated also, I live between Charleston and Huntington. Basically i need to know what all needs done in order to get this motor in and running right.

The easiest route is going to be swap the wiring harness, especially if you got the STi trans as well. The differance besides the immobilizer is the STi also has drive by wire and AVCS. Your best bet is going to be getting the wiring diagrams for both vehicles and going from there. No matter what route you go wiring wise it will not be plug and play you will need the wiring diagrams.

Speaking from experience, pull the dash, pull the front fender liners, remove the WRX Front and Bulkhead harnesses, replace with same harnesses from STi. You may run into some issues with the automatic climate control feature. No reason to cut into your harness.

sorry for the WAY overdue responce to this thread...and i mean WAY overdue lol. I completed the car and sold it in august of 09 i believe. I recieved a PM by someone in california stating they could convert the wrx and sti harnesses together for me so i sent them to him, and as promised, he returned them plug and play. Im sure i could have taken the time and mated them myself, but i wasnt willing to try that for the first time on this kind of project. You can run the sweeping STI cluster in a WRX as well, idk if you were aware of that or not, you just have to clip one of the wires leading to the cluster or youll blow your sterio fuse i believe. anyways, Car ran rediculously strong. It was a tuned 05 sti motor with fmic, short ram intake, and turbo back exhaust (invidia dp and hkp Hi-Po catback). Sounded great, highly recommended exhaust. To anyone looking into this swap i strongly recommend keeping the 5 spd, it will impress anybody who rides in it (big dif in boost build than the 6 spd). the 02-03 wrx tranny's do prove to be weak so you'll want to build them eventually. I had a stage 3 clutch and lightened flywheel in mine which proved to be too much for the tranny and would thump when taking off from a stop (new owner said the throw-out bearing and clutch were too strong for the tranny?)
