I installed an AVH-p3400bt unit today and I can't seem to get it to dim with the gauges when headlights are on...

Does anyone have an idea how to do this? I have a 2011 wrx.

It just dims with headlights on, doesn't gradually adjust down like factory radio AFAIK. I just installed the 3300BT and there was no wire to hook up that would allow that.
-unless I totally missed something.

Illumination Control Wire

Most HUs have a wire to control the brightness of their illumination. The dimming is two-stage: The HU will be at full brightness during the day, and slightly dimmed when you turn on your car's headlights.

If your HU has a wire for "Dimmer" or "Illumination Control," connect that to the Orange wire (pin 1, Illumination +) on the 20-pin harness.
I hope I'm wrong though.

EDIT-
If it isn't dimming AT ALL, you need to hook up the dimmer wire, then read manual to adjust brightness for the ''dim mode''. Mine was too dim in dimmer mode by default.

Mine just stays the same brightness.., the screen I can lower manually but the buttons on the side stay the same brightness...

I'll have to check on it tomorrow but I hooked up all the wires as they are supposed to be.

I don't think the buttons dim, just the screen, but the screen should dim. Check link in my post above.

The HU's wire may be Orange or Orange/White. However, some HUs have no dimmer wire at all — some have no dimming capability, and other recent models use an ambient light sensor or GPS time and location. A few HUs even have an Orange/White wire that is not for illumination. Check your HU's installation instructions!

There ya go......

I'm going to re-check my 3300BT manual, but I don't think there's a gradual dimmer that hooks up to pin 2.

Got it now, thanks..

Also noticed the hu has a hiss as soon as you mess with the eq.. Keep it in flat and it's not terrible, radio isn't bad it seems just on my iPod the hiss is present.. Tried grounding the hu to chassis but that didnt work.. I have no subwoofer so the rca's aren't the problem..

Anyone else have this issue?

I'm an audio amateur but try turning the volume down on the iPod and the volume up on the headunit.

Yeah I notice a little hiss with the volume really loud on a CD, but I have an amp.. Also radio reception isn't the greatest, even though everything is hooked up right. Lots of static. 3300 and 3400 probably have a lot in common inside..

I have tried everything under the sun to resolve the bad radio reception. If you find anything please let me know.

Yeah, I made it MUCH better by hooking subaru antenna amplifier right up directly to accessory power, but that's just because I run an amp amd a big fat relay for brake bypass.

It's 'ok' now, but still not as good as subaru POS stock deck which is a huge disappointment.

I should add that I'm trying to pull in relatively weak FM stations that are close by, but even the powerful stations have way more static than they should. I'd send it back to Crutchfield for a replacement if I thought it would help, but I bet it'd be the same on all of them. It sounds a lot better when car is stationary though. When car is moving is when I get stereo cutting out and excess static.

I did the same thing with the power lead. I am running an Audio Control 3.2 EQ/line driver that is causing the interference i think I am getting. If I bypass the EQ and go straight to the amp my FM signal comes in pretty good. I can't seem to find the problem. I have tried everything I could think of and a lot of help from others but got nothing. Crutchfield tech and Audio Control engineers have no more answers for me. I don't listen to the radio much except in the morning so it doesn't bother to much but I can't even use my HD radio or regular radio for that matter. The EQ is nice for cd's and the iPod though.

Mine isn't hissing with the radio.. I'll try a cd to see if it does the same thing.

I'm using the front USB for my iPod... If I turn the eq to flat there's little to no hiss.. I can live with it but it's annoying that the terrible oem unit is silent compared to this.

Figured it out.. It's the eq setting that's all the way to the right, lower that to +2-+4 and a majority of the hiss goes awAy.

Yesterday I hooked up the ground wire that goes to the back of the stock HU to the 3300BT. Now it is grounded twice I guess as there's already a ground in the harness. I also changed back to the stock antenna lead with the 90 degree bend as the straight plug one I got at my local stereo shop didn't help at all and possibly made reception a little bit worse.

After doing that I think there is a very small improvement in FM reception.. Could be just the cloudy weather too.. Who knows.

Where did everybody pick up theirs? If I have to wait for an shipment from buying online for $400 I will. It seems bestbuy doesn't have them yet (not on their site at least) and there's only 2 auto shops remotely close to my house. And one of them are hardcore ripoffs..

I got my avh-p3400 from best buy. If you did order online there's sonixelectronics, woofersetc, crutchfield or the cheapest probably amazon.

I could have gotten the 4400 online for same price I paid at bestbuy but it was just one of those "want it now" moments.

I think you need the pioneer adapter that goes in the back of the unit (if it's like the 3400) I think motion x gps works, maybe google maps

I do like the 7" screen on that and the buttons on the bottom as opposed to the side.

I like the 5v output of the 3300BT. Don't know why they went backwards.

Question: Is there any security precaution that can be taken for these types of touchscreen headunits? As far as i'm aware they don't have detachable faceplates so you always have this fine ass touchscreen on display..

I was thinking about getting some kind of dummy plate to go over top of it.. just a flat piece of plastic to cover it up.
