Cobb intake - question about conical filter
Hey there. I have the Cobb CAI on my BE. I'm plagued by a nagging thought that the tube that holds the cone-filter is not going in the right direction, despite following instructions/images verbatim. The tip of the cone filter is pointed towards the throttle body right now, as it is installed in the tube. I keep thinking this is incorrect, as most CAI's show the tip of the cone filter pointed towards the fender. Anyone want to clarify that I did it right/wrong?
Thanks.

i'm not 100% familiar with the COBB intake, but I imagine its similar to most. With that in mind, I can't visualize what you did. Some pics would help us figure what went wrong...

That is the best I could do immediatly - can't get to my own car right now. Basically, that black plastic tube you see near the fender houses a cone filter, like any other. The instructions from Cobb seem to direct that the narrow end of the cone point away from the fender, so you need to install the black plastic tube such as that the narrow end of the filer points towards the engine block. Now, my reason for trepidation is that I've never seen a cone filter that didn't point towards the fender, and this is what worries me - it may just be that Cobb has its own way of doing things, but I can't shake my nervousness. |

So you are saying that the air from the fender would be going into the back side of the filter? I guess that shouldn't matter as long as there are no leaks. The air will still be filtered, just using the other side of the filtering material. Personally, I don't think it will make a difference. Maybe someone with some experience with the COBB system can chime in. If all else fails, e-mail COBB and double check with them to see if you in fact installed it properly.
Just out of curiosity... what did that intake set you back? Thanks, -BB98 |

Thanks for the reply, bro. You've got the gist of it - just wanted to make sure for the meantime nothing catastrophic is going to happen.
The intake set me back about $280, new from Cobb. It's a bit of change, but it's really worth it in the design sense. It's very well put together, and a better overall design then others I've tried. |

I'm pretty sure that if you search in the N/A forum you will find your answer. It seems like this was covered within the last 6 months or so. (someone noticed that someones filter was backwards in a pic they posted)

I just cleaned my Cobb CAI, after over a year of accumulated gunk and whatnot. You are looking at the installation properly because the cone should be pointing in the direction of flow. The filter is either two-sided and has the same filtering capability on both sides, or it was designed and manufactured so that the inside is the filtering surface.
Interestingly enough, the filter is much easier to clean with the dirty part on the inside. After using a K&N kit to spray it down with cleaner, you just run the filter under a tap and presto, everything comes loose. Putting the oil on the inside was a bit harder than it would have been if the filter was reversed, but like the instructions say, it's better to apply it in 2-3 light coats than to get it wrong and have to clean it all over again. |

Thanks for the replys! I figured it out, and I had it right. According to the Cobb directions, "it's opposite of what most people expect." So, thanks again, I'm good to go!

Useless FYI, but Formula cars that run an air filter generally have the cone "backwards".

glad you got it straightened out.. Another question about it though. Where does the end of the pipe that goes into the fender end up? I might have to get one of these if its shaped the way I want.
thanks, -BB98 |

Since the filter is in the pipe in the engine bay, I don't believe that pipe goes anywhere, really. Just to the fender well to pull in cold air.

Yup. The pipe goes into the fender about a half inch or so and stops. The length of the pipe is one of the reasons it makes good power, but also contributes to the amount of noise it makes under a heavy foot. I like the sound

Nice, just what I was looking for... those boys at COBB know how to do things right. And they charge for it Guess I'll have to put this on the back burner, as I have more important things on the list that aren't quite as harsh on the wallet.
Thanks, -BB98 |
