Default an update regarding my DIY intake for 05RS

Hi Guys,

Since I dont like the idea of paying $230~ for an injen intake
so I am going to make my own.....after a lot of research
and testing I've decided to try the following different setup
and then I will DYNO to see which one work better...

MAF adaptor with airfilter

^^^ This one is the easiest way to make our RS breath better
but at the same time we are still using the stock piping...so I am
guess it wont work as good as when we are using an aluminum intake
pipe like the INJEN

COST $20 shipped

2nd setup with OBX CAI off ebay
Intake can be purchase here

^^^ this setup is more complicated...it will probably require to plug one or two of the vacum hose and some cutting on the pipe to make the MAF housing working properly...but it shouldnt be that hard...and I think with this setup it will work the best...you can also choose to do SHORT RAM or COLD AIR setup like the injen....

lastly I will highly recommended a REAL K&N intake...which is only like $35-40
and the whole setup with all the little extra parts will not cost you more than $120...pretty good deal I think...

any input or comments???

ok I am using setup #1 right now...not sure about power gain but the car is breathing better than before. This is only a $20 upgrade, so
I would say its worth the money.
When it gets warmer I will switch to SETUP #2 and see what happen.

By the way the car is louder, throttle response is better and you know how the power usuall come in around 4kRPM for our car...now when i floor the gas the power come in around 3.5k rpm...

You will see a small nice gain from that. Give it some time, it'll get a little better.

I think that if you can somehow sheild it off from the rest of the engine back and use a 2.75 to 3" flex hose from the fender into the engine bay on, or near the filter you should be able to feed it some cool air, and block as much of hot air from the engine.

seems like an exensive experiment for someone who isn't willing to pay $230 for an intake. IMO you should just buy an injen intake instead of making these then spending the money on 2 DYNO base runs... unless you've got hook-ups for dyno runs. then i guess it kinda makes sense. good luck

Cheers,

yea...i have access to free dyno runs ...hehe

and the thing is...
spending $230 for the injen intake does not guarantee 17hp gain like it promised
thats why when most ppl say "you should just get the injen" yet I still want to find out another way to acheive same/similar/better result for less money...

hmmm...to me intake is an intake...it helps the car breath better by using lighter and less restrive pipping...of coz the design of the intake will make a difference but does the difference worth paying extra $100+ for it...thats when I decided to go thru the whole "experiment"

either way...I can never depend on just an intake to produce enough power to make me happy
its just something fun to do to keep my boring life less boring...heheh

thanks for ur opinion! =)

Well I did a DIY intake. Here is how mine turned out....

I left my stock inlet and airbox (with a K&N Filter) and took everything inbetween out. Then I got a 2 1/2 pipe bent at an exhaust shop (Mienekee) used some radiator hose and some clamps. Painted the pip red for some extra flare.

Here are some more pics from awhile ago before painting...

this setup is very creative...
but i think it is not working as good as
if you are using a FILTER-----PIPE----T-body setup

i am pretty sure if you get rid of the stock airbox
and put a filter at the end of the pipe will yield
to a better result...it is also because of the
fact that theres a very narrow "CONJUNCTION"
between the pipe you got from mienikee and
plastic piece with the RALLITECK.com sticker
it will give you better result if you get rid of that too

but i gotta say your setup is very good looking...

btw i left my car at my friend's shop yesterday for the DYNO test
and they were using my 05RS and my bro's 05RS (stock) to compare to result

then i got a call later last night and my friend said there is a 6hp and 9 ft/lb of torque
of increase compare to a stock RS with my setup...and he told me our car is kinda weak at the high end (I KNOW!!!) hehe
i m not suprise because the stock intake setup with really narrow and restrictive...and to me the car pull harder now, not a lot but its noticeable when i floor the pedal...

not a whole lot of power gain but consider it is only a $20 mod...i think its worth to do it...

Hold up, so your car and your brothers' car, the only difference is your intake? Those are very impressive gains for just an intake. Those 9 ft-lb to the wheels are huge, and you'll definitely notice a gain on the butt dyno.

Curious, what were the actual numbers both yours and you brother's cars ran on the dyno? Interested to see what a stock 05RS dyno's out at.

omg

if he made that big of a difference to the wheels on a setup like that, then i really need to get my car on the dyno...

Exactly, an intake suddenly became much more of a priority than it was before.

I'm actually wondering if the 05's have some changes in the ECU that make it take to mods better than older cars. The 17hp/20tq Injen claims on their 05 RS intake is MASSIVE, even with tuning I could never see an intake going that high. But 6/9 is even monstrous for a quality intake, nevermind a hacked-together DIY setup. Kinda wondering if Injen realized a near-double-digit hp gain and double-digit tq gain, and tuned it out to make the numbers just right absurd.

Numbers become believable if the 05 ECU has some more mod-friendly qualities.

He's running a freakin' MAF Adapter and a Filter.

You want 'hacked-together' DIY setup, that'd be me

Nice, if that's the real power gain, but by using 2 different vehicles to make the comparison, there's just too many variables to make it believable. It would have been better to have your car dyno'd stock, swap on the intake and dyno again, all in the same day. Then it would rule out differences like your brother's car needing a tune-up and yours was just done, etc.

Here's the setup on my 95 Legacy wagon. Intake temps are DRASTICALLY reduced.
Now all I have to do is get a thermometer in there to see what it really does.
