Help me make up my mind with me build (ARP studs)
Hey guys, for those of you who don't know I am putting together a fully built ej22t that is going to run a Water/air intercooler with a T67 turbo and i am hoping to reach 400-450 whp on my wrx and I have hit a huge dession point in my build. As it stands right now I have purchased a set of ARP head studs in hopes of gaining some extra clamping force.
I have been confronted by a few friends that are telling me that i am a fool for not running 1/2 studs. MY question is how often do you see HG failures or head studs pulling out the threads in the block because of high boost aplicatons? My builder is trying to find a set of heli coils that will fit down the block halfs but he feels that the head studs are fine the way they are because of the nature and differences in head studs compared to head bolts. I wish Subaru made a cast iron block!!! Has anyone used 11mm arp studs with helicoils? or is there another brand that has to be used?

I've seen 2.5's making 600WHP with ARP studs screwed directly into the block and not having HG issues...

I personally have never seen any ARP head studs pull the threads out of the block....ever....
I have instalelled them on more than 20 Subaru Engines now and there has never been an issue like this to occur.... I personally have built 4 engines that make more than 550whp using the standard 11mm ARP head studs and running cometic head gaskets... the only reason in my eyes that these studs could ever pull the threads out of the block would be if the engine builder torqued the studs into the block and stripped the threads out instead of just seating them gently as they are meant to be installed.... right at the edge of barely snug by hand.... or just enough to keep them from actually being torqued in.... because you are using the nut at the top to stretch the stud and make it act like a spring, you are not using the threads in the block to tighten the stud into for head retention.... now, on the other side of things, if you are going to build an all out Ej22T, and you are going to use a T67 turbo, which is capable of upwards of 650whp, I would almost recommend the 14mm studs to you, as your turbo will be capable of crossing the boundary of safety that I feel is around 580whp or so (depending on timing, fuel type, lack of detonation, etc.) to keep the head gasket sealed up..... otherwise, if you are really aiming for 400-450whp, I would choose a smaller turbo that will give you more power through a broader powerband and make the car much quicker and more responsive (and more fun to drive!).... A Gt3076R or a GT35R or even a smaller T series turbo or a Borg Warner turbo that was a bit smaller..... I have a T67 at home also, and an EJ22T block, and Oliver rods, but, I just haven't been able to mess with it yet when I enjoy my APS S/R 50( GT30R based turbo) so much..... |
