Default Variable WRX fuel pump vs basic Impreza pump?

I have heard that the WRX uses a variable speed fuel pump that is controlled by a little fuel pump controller box. Older, basic imprezas had a regular fuel pump that always ran at the same speed. Has anyone used the fixed-speed pump setup with a WRX motor?

Thanks for any insight,
Bryan

I would assume the answer to this question is yes, but does the wrx have the same fuel pressure regulator setup as the older cars?

Does the stock fuel pressure regulator just not flow enough, so without the fuel pump controller, you run rich.....or is there some other sort of issues...

Default WRX fuel pump controller with old fuel pump?

So, can you use an old fuel pump that came off a car with a fixed-rate pump with the WRX fuel pump controller?

The fuel pump in non-turbo Subaru's are still variable speed, they are just controlled by the ECU instead of a separate controller.

Using the old fuel pump would not flow enough fuel to supply a WRX or STI engine.

The older pumps are not variable speed. They are simply on/off. The ECU just controls whether the pump is on or off

This diagram is for the 90-94 legacies, and the 99 is exactly the same.

Exactly.

The FPC is not needed to run the car but it is a nice feature to have.

DO NOT RUN THE STOCK FUEL PUMP. It will not flow enough fuel. Either use a stock WRX pump or something bigger if you are planing on doing extensive power mods.

Are you sure it runs rich without the fuel pump controller?

The FPR still regulates pressure to the same psi the same no matter what. My understanding is that the fuel pressure remains constant and the flow of the pump is reduced with the fuel pump controller; to extend the life of the fuel pump.

Make a harness for it using some female blade connectors and some shrink tubing. I've had to do that more than a few times. Other people have done that too.

sorry should have put run rich down low where all the fuel being pumped isn't needed but up top the lower flow pump wil run out of breath and not be flowing enough
