Exhaust Question for a QUIET Exhaust..
Hey guys,
Quick question before I make my purchase. Car: 2005 2.0 Invidia UP/DP with HKS carbon-ti exhaust K&N Typhoon SRI Cobb AP v.1 'protuned' I've grown tired of my exhaust drone on the highway, along with the unnecessary attention i've been getting from cops. I want a nice, quiet, aftermarket exhaust for my car, something that doesn't drone on the highway and is about as quiet as stock while idling/cruising (stock one is way too restrictive...) I was thinking about getting the Cobb catback along with a catless cobb downpipe, since cobb's catback won't mate to the invidia downpipe properly. 1. Any suggestions on any other exhausts I might want to reconsider going with? I've heard the borla hush and maddad whisper, and I don't know if it was video quality or what but they sounded like crap, and I feel like they have this drone that nobody talks about. 2. Also, will the smaller exhaust affect my tune that I got with the larger one? Thanks all EDIT: Can I run the stock wrx or stock STI axleback mated to the remenants of the HKS exhaust? (ie no stock midpipe?)

SPT FTW, Stock look, nice boxer rumble sound at WOT and keeps cops looking forward as they pass going the other way.
You can still retain the size with SPT. |

1. prodrive
2. probably not unless it was a super aggressive tune. you should be fine. at least contact your tuner and see what they say. but im sure its totally fine. |

too bad M2 isn't selling subie parts anymore...they were importing a austrailian setup that is very quiet yet straight-thru.

Side question: do you guys think it would matter if I went back with my stock axleback? Or maybe stick on a STI axleback on there? Would it affect the tune?

I'm in the same boat.
My Prodrive muffler + stock resonator section was pretty quiet. Perfect, in fact. I've since moved to a 3"-->2.5" non-resonated straight-pipe (in place of the resonated stock section) and it's now loud as heck. I *really* like the sound of the Prodrive, but the highway drone is driving me nuts. |

I think the STI axleback would be perfect...with the remains of the HKS carbon-ti that is...

I have a greddy evo 2 on my 05 wrx. All you have to do is get some kartboy exhaust hangers. Its great. I havent been pulled over because its not too loud. no droning on the highways.

How about the WBR catback. Its a full 3" available with a black can. Sounds beautiful. Compares to the Maddad maybe quieter. Looks almost stock. Never had a cop look twice.
500 shipped doesn't get any better. Just run some KB XL hangers and your set. Or the axleback (keep HKS mid) for 300 shipped. Also, i am running the TXS stealthback (catless) with WBR black axleback. Its about as loud as a 350z. (different note of course) |

I have a Borla Hush mated to a TXS down and mid pipe. No drone on the highway but it is loud when you get on it.

if the Cobb won't work with your DP, neither will the STi. Both use the same stock -sized donut gasket.

Evo 2
I personally think you need to keep the exhast flow open enough for the tune you have. If you restrict that opening you will affect your ability to push the extra power from the tune through the engine, turbo, and exhaust. Use an Greddy Evo 2 like others have said. I know many guys at a real respected shop that run them for some serious horsepower set-ups. I have one on a stage two set-up. Quiet, yet there at idle and cruising, and nasty when you get on it. Truly the best of both worlds. Oh and I do not have any fitment issues. Perrin UP, Cobb DP, and Evo 2 Catback. Does not shake, rattle, or cause me any problems.
Just my two cents! or three!! |

if you stuck on your more restricting catback, it would affect the power of your car. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I imagine you'd be running a little richer since it's not as freeflowing?

The maddad whisper is pretty quiet. Did you see the video that Daddysscp had up for his twin tip exhaust? Doesn't sound that bad imo I had the greddy evo 2 mated to a PDE catted downpipe but sold it. Reason being is because for MY car there was fitment issues. I had to use long exhaust hangars so the exhaust was hanging too low and it really ticked me off. Also the tip looks like a fart cannon which I'm not overly fond of. After that I was split between the Cobb catted TBE and the APS R1" catted TBE. I went with APS and have not regret it since. Doesn't really drone as much as the Greddy did. It is slightly louder (according to that DB spread sheet it says it's around 94 where greddy is like 92/93?). Plus it's a full 3" all the way through. I did not go with the cobb because it tapers at the midpipe and is louder than the APS by a few db. They both cost nearly the same and will be louder than the Greddy Evo 2, but a lot quieter than any titanium exhaust. They both look nearly stock. They both fit with no problems. |

Thanks for the helpful comments guys..
But I think i'm just geared towards getting either a stock STI axleback or putting back my stock WRX axleback. I really would like to know if it would affect my tune or not (I would call my tuner but I believe their closed for the long weekend...and if I get a solid answer I can do the swap this weekend). Thanks!!!! |
