*cough* *cough* Tell me why again why we do not have diesel passenger cars here in the US?

Seems shortsighted and stupid to have not brought this in a few years ago... If only the engine into passenger cars.

Because people like Al Gore will go at the sound of a diesel engine no matter how awesome it is.

most of the newer diesels wouldn't work with our old fuel.

the change came about a year or two ago, and it will take time for manufacturers to first decide, then actually bring them to market.

Ya wanna know why diesels haven't - and might never - catch on in the US?

Because of craptacular diesels that GM brought out back in the 70s and 80s that turned Americans against the idea of a diesel in a passenger car...

... it's the similar reason to why Americans won't buy hatchbacks - they got completely turned off by them back in the 70s and 80s by awful efforts like the Gremlin and Omni and other similar crapmobiles.

Oh yea, and the fact that diesel is actually still more expensive than Premium gasoline in many areas of the US, will keep diesel cars out of most American driveways.

Diesels should have been the fuel of choice for 90% of all Detroit SUVs/pickups for decades now, but that's now what happened is it?

I do not agree with the hatchback statement. We have so many different hatchback choices right now..how can you say they are not selling:

Mazda 3
Golf
Yaris
Fit
Mini
Aveo
G3
Astra
Fiesta (soon)
Polo (soon)
Matrix
XB
Accent
Soul
Rio5
Impreza
Versa

^^ let me clarify... it's not that I think that Americans don't like hatchbacks, it's that every time the subject of hatchbacks was brought up to Detroit executives, they would always say that Americans don't like hatchbacks. And that thinking was based on the fact that Americans won't buy craptacular hatchbacks, just like Americans won't buy craptacular diesels either, and Detroit's has a history of making 1/2-hearted attempts at both those.

(I personally love the convenience of hatchbacks, just like I also think that diesels would be a cool alternative to have here, but realistically don't think it's gonna happen)

I think that the car-buying public is constantly changing. The crappy hatches and diesels were never really expeirienced by anyone under 30. Change will come, just slowly.

once that the refineries complete the US madated upgrades (2010), Diesel prices should drop dramatically.

$3 diesel vs $2 gas is the only thing that currently sucks. As mh_WRX said, once the upgrades are completed they'll become viable. Right now a 60mpg diesel with a $5000 premium in price will still have you losing money over 100,000mi compared to the same car with a 30mpg gas engine.

The estimate I have heard is 90% of Regular gas prices for highway use diesel fuel by mid 2010.

I think we've seen this before - the price of diesel is dramatically different depending upon location. I haven't checked it recently but I know just a few weeks ago it was over $1 more than premium gasoline. That's crazy... you aren't gonna sell cars that run on diesels in this area till that drops.

I'm glad darknightohio shed some doubt on my statement.

Current average US price for Gas and Diesel: $2.059 & 2.221

Gas is on the rise, diesel is falling. Great news!
