Lol I know exactly what you mean.

And maybe on a different one. This one is just too nice with so little original miles to mess with. However I do agree with you about dumped things. It's just not right for this car.

| AN EVEN BIGGER UPDATE |

So, it wouldn't start and wasn't getting spark so we had to take the ignition system down to individual pieces, clean everything, and re-time the system. After doing this, we were able to get it to sputter to life only briefly using ether.

http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk194/mustangjeff1997/?action=view&current=VID_20120730_201121.mp4
After that, I realized that we had only put a very small amount of gas in the tank for preliminary checks and such. We put more gas in and it cranked right away like it was run yesterday or something. It turned over on the second revolution of the starter, no complaints. I am utterly stunned that this project has been going so well.

(the smoke is from dad putting oil in the cylinders last fall to make sure that the motor didn't dry start after sitting for so long)

http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk194/mustangjeff1997/?action=view&current=VID_20120730_202041.mp4
So yeah...it runs great, idles, revs alright and everything. Next on the list is a journey to the bottom of the car.

Stay tuned!

Got home from work a little bit ago and went to start the Model A up.

It immediately fired right up and ran beautifully just like yesterday. Still some smoke, but not as much as yesterday. It's so exciting to know that the motor won't take much work to be done.

This car is in at my folk's place in Paris. I'll finally be out in Commerce again in a couple of weeks. If you wanted to meet in Commerce and cruise over to Paris to see it, that would be fine. I just want to see your car haha. Thing is nuts

Time for a small update.

We got a complete, comprehensive repair manual for Model A's that covers any and all maintenance that you could possibly want to do to one of these cars...all for $30.

We also found a catalog that sells EVERYTHING for these cars. Needless to say, we'll be ordering quite a few things from it. Things that our car is either missing or have worn out and need replacing. Again, we are not RESTORING the car, just getting it driveable and operational again.

Now, when we took the spare tire off, we found a weird metal "strap" coming down off of a very, very strange lug nut that was helping hold the wheel on the back. We had no idea what that was about and our local "Model A guru" guy had never seen one. While searching through our extra parts and misc items that came with the car, we found the other piece to it.

It's a lock for the spare so nobody steals it. Another very, very neat and clever piece of design.

That's all for now. I won't have another update next weekend as I'll be moving but I will keep this thread up-to-date with what happens in the coming period of time.

Watched the videos.. That is so cool (and a lot of smoke. : lol: ). I'd be like a kid in a candy store with this car.

Thanks man! It means a lot.

There hasn't been too much progress lately. We got two tires mounted but that's about it right now. More progress should be made within the next few months, though.

Way to keep it original. Nice to see history kept in one piece instead of a clean car tore apart and turned in to an evil "rat" rod.

Nice car you got there.

My buddy has a 27 he's building into a traditional hotrod and another buddy of mine is finishing up a phaeton right now. We've got quite a few of them in the club actually.

One day I'll have a 31 5 window....

Fantastic project. As others have said, it's great to see you keeping it original. Some people IMO take that to the extreme and don't even clean the car to maintain the "patina" of age, but I think that's silly. Cleaning it up to its original condition, as you've done, is the way to go.

Definitely looking forward to some pics of the car on freshened up wheels and good rubber, and of course some videos of it on the road!

Thanks guys. I'll definitely be documenting more when it comes to time to drive it and what it takes to get there. I'm actually really surprised at all of the support for us doing what we're doing as opposed to rat rodding it. We've gotten some decent flak about that locally. BUT this car is staying in the family and staying just the way it is.

And that's the way it should be. Cars like this are really the most solid example of an era gone by, and it's cool to see somebody dedicated to preserving that. A lot of people go through all the pain to restore it perfectly, but then it doesn't have the paint that was brushed on in 1930, it doesn't have all the little signs of age that tell the story of the car. Keep up the good work!

I am still here. The car is doing just fine and is still in our hands. It runs, it's road worthy, but we have not registered it as we absolutely don't want any sort of accident to happen with it. Since I last updated this thread my dad has built a nice large shop for the car to live in and he drives it around the property occasionally.

I hate that I had to miss this opportunity because of work, but here is a photo that encompasses three generations of Callaway men and a car that is a part of all of them.

From left to right, you have my brother, Jason, my Grandfather, Jack, and my dad, Scott.

Sadly, this will probably be the last time that my grandfather gets to visit Texas and see his old car.
