Default How To: Find a Tuner (NESIC Subaru Tuners List)

So you got some sick mods for your car, and your research on NASIOC says that you really need a tune for that Intake and Turboback Exhaust. But you're new to the scene in your area and don't know where to go for a tune. What do you do?

First off, you should REALLY find a tuner FIRST, before you buy the parts. Sometimes they can give you package deals on parts, install and tune. Sometimes they will save your ass from buying a piece of garbage. But sometimes we do impulse buy things.

So how do you find a tuner?

Here's what you don't do:
-DO NOT start a thread in General or the Newbie Forum or OT asking for a tuner. Unless you're ready to drive 6000 miles.
-DO NOT start a thread in your regional forum. Why? Because those threads turn into popularity contests. In every thread, people jump in just to say "abc technologies ftw" or "+1 def tuning" or "ghi performance sucks" without any reasoning why. Most of these people don't have any real world first (or even second) hand knowledge of any tuner but their own, and hell sometimes that's questionable. These "recommendations" mean absolutely nothing other than who has the most friends.

Here's what you do do: (haha I said dodo)
-Fill out your profile.
-Make a list of goals and a budget. What are you wanting to do with the car? How much power do you want? Do you have backup transportation? Do you have a spare $5000-10000 in the bank in case **** hits the fan?
-SEARCH!
  • Search your regional forum for keyword "Tune" and "Tuner" (Search Titles Only!).
  • Read the the results from the last 6 months or so. This gives you the most up to date info, as many times tuners change shops, quit, shops close, or unfortunately, people pass away.
  • Write down the names of these shops and tuners.
  • Now search the forums for the names of those tuners and shops. Read the in depth reviews. Any "review" that is less than a paragraph long and doesn't include details of an actual visit, ignore.
  • Google the names of these shops and tuners. Scroll through the first few pages of Google results, again, looking for reviews.
  • Once you've narrowed it down to a couple tuners, pick up the phone, or better yet, get off your ass and drive there. Check out the shop. Do you feel like you can trust these guys? If you walk into a shop and you get that gut feeling its just wrong, just walk out. Remember that list of goals and budget from earlier? Bring it! Discuss it with the tuner. LISTEN TO HIM.

This should be bumped once a week, although I'm sure people will still start new threads asking the same question.

I'm going to leave this open for another day or three. After that, if people want to recommend a new tuner be added to this list they will have to PM vision.dynamix.

I was thinking about the unregistered tuners.

Perhaps list with no links because....well....they do exist. (whatever Nate thinks is fine with me.....)

It's not really fair to the vendors who pay the fee and support the site if we are promoting non registered vendors, IMO. A name without a link is just as good as a link..it's 1 extra mouse click to get to their site.

Have you talked with a tuner? Do you have a turbo?

What is your actual question?

They still offer street tuning and dyno tuning out of RI (actually 2 minutes over the state line in MA). Only listing them in NH is misleading to someone from RI looking at this thread.

Honestly Wicked is so good that they should be thought of as a national mechanic. It would be worth shipping your car to them (see the reviews) from very far away. This is the only shop that actually made me feel like a human being, taking an individualized approach, explaining all work or items every step of the way, telling me what I needed, what is nice to have, and what's a waste of money. They were the only shop that gave me the impression they are working in my best interest.

So you want a mechanic and tuner, and sick of going to the stealership, look no farther than Wicked Innovation!

http://wickedinnovation.net/wicked-m-tuning-policy/

I do street tuning out of Manchester, NH and Southern RI.
I do dyno tuning out of Seekonk, MA generally.

All other tune related info can be found in the link above.
