Default 2011 WRX Rebuild w/ Steamspeed STX 71

I am currently in the middle of a rebuild on my 2011 WRX with a 2006 JDM STI 6MT with DCCDpro. Before I took the car to the tuner I was pushing about 309WHP and 336FTLB on virtual dyno. Sadly, because the car had over 100k miles I cracked number 4 ringland. I will post my virtual dyno pic when I get a chance from before the ringland issue. I will also keep this thread up to date on the build.

SteamSpeed STX 71 turbo w/ 8cm^2 Hotside http://steamturbochargers.com/index....x-sti-8cm.html
ID1000 injectors
DW65c Fuel Pump

All Aspects Motorsports E85 and 93 Tune

I am hoping to see 430whp and 450ftlbs after break in period and retune.

Picture updates soon... BTW I received the turbo in less than a week and it was in awesome shape. I will have the tuner take pics next to the VF52 for comparison and post them up here ASAP.

You broke a ringland and think it was because the motor had too many miles on it? Whats the plan on this motor, drive it less?

i guess i did leave out some info, i bought the car with 90k on it with no idea of the previous owner. When i went stage 2 i noticed that all the PITA bolts were missing meaning that someone else had taken the DP off at some point, probably to go stage 2 or more. So not knowing the tune prior to me having the car or the driving habits, im betting i bought a car with 90k drove hard miles. My tuner said its possible that the ringland could have been cracked when i bought the car just with no symptoms. 9 months of 19-20psi on a car that was probably driven hard before i bought it. Number 4 let go. As far as i know i didnt have any Detonation, ran good quality gas and monitored FBK, Data Logged about once every 2 weeks and kept my knock logs up to date to see if i was pulling timing anywhere. Car was healthy and then one day after some spirited driving i was pulling -13* FBK at low load low RPM and then failed leakdown and compression test

Interested to see how this turbo will do. So much hype and so much trash talk of the competition by steamspeed, it better be amazing.

I'll be going with the fp green or red with my motor build but always considered this turbo. Great choice! Curious to see how it will compare with the fp green

I had one of these turbo's on my car last year.

It was alright and it did mid 11's.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2641720

I swapped it out for a similarly priced Kinugawa 60-1 and ran high 10's. If you're set on the ~$1000 price range I'd probably go for a Kinugawa 20G or 60-1 or an FP Green or Black. Or even a used Blouch turbo could be close to this price.

What made you choose the DCCD Pro? I have ran that in the past and I'm not really a fan. I greatly prefer the MapDCCD. Something to consider if you haven't already made the purchase.

Well my car is apart, and in the process of going back together at the tuner. I originally tried to get a Kinugawa 20G-TD06 but they were sold out and it was going to take 4 weeks to get one so they sold me a STX 71. I thought about a 60-1 and even spoke to my tuner about it, he said that since i decided to stick with stock rods on the rebuild that pushing over 500whp might be risky.

I am curious how it would have performed without the exhaust leak you had. Also 122mph traps is no joke for a DD level car. I would say you would have gained 1-2mph without the leak.

Ever thought about going with the fp red? They have them for sale right now, and with your setup and the right fuel you can see 475-500whp and over 400ft/lbs

should be 2 weeks give or take a few days and ill have my car back with the breakin tune. At some point before i had the car someone either broke the block apart or replaced the timing belt, im assuming SOA replaced a piston a while back. Either way when they put the AVCS cams back on, who ever did it, couldnt get the cams on right and hammered them on and oblonged the holes causing the timing to be off enough im guessing for valves to hit the pistons or each other. Machine shop said that both intake and exhaust valves needed replacement, from damage and burning. The rotating assembly is together, heads have been checked and decked. Monday they will be installing new guides and valves and delivering heads and rotating assembly to the tuner to check valve clearances and begin assembly.

Bumping for update:

Got the car back, currently running break in tune. 4k Rev Limiter and running on waste gate only boost control.

It is surprising how much better the car runs without a cracked piston. I am at 273 of 500 miles for break in, should be getting E85 tune and 93 Tune this week, or the beginning of next week.

I will be posting Dyno Sheets ASAP.

Im rather interested in how your results are. There sure is a lot of hype about these turbos. Still haven't seen much to back it up though. I was one of the og beta testers for the STX67 which did pretty good... Still way more claims then results though. Also Ive yet to see a tuner really push these turbos on their customers... Even the ones that have tuned them don't seem to be tripping over themselves to get customers to order them. Im wondering why not... What do they know or not know? haha

Ya I had a similar sized turbo but I was on a stock block and just had all the bolt-ons and we came very close to maxing out the ID1000s on e85 making 421whp @ 23lbs

Quick update, Tune is this Friday, the 18th. I will be going in with 1000+ miles to do my oil change, E85, and 93 Tune.

Just a quick picture of under the hood after some heat control wrapping https://goo.gl/photos/5oD15wU1ZRfgC7fi7

so tune is done, car pulls like a freight train. Ended up putting down 360/360 on e85. Not exactly where I wanted to be, but we couldn't get it to boost over 20 psi. Tuner thinks its the wastegate actuator so I will be contacting SteamSpeed to see about possibly sending a higher pressure actuator before going external.

the plots look smooth, and I bet the car is fun, but I expected way more than 360/360 on e85. Like WAY more
I'm well over 400 on a blouch 440xt at almost the same boost level, and steam keeps always talking smack about Blouch, so I expect their much bigger turbo to be much more powerful too.

I can tell you this, the spring in the actuator is weak, I was under the impression it was a 1 bar spring. Turns out its a .8 preloaded to a .9 . I tried preloading the arm alittle to make up the boost, didnt really help so im looking into getting a 1.2 bar spring, which should be more than enough for my boost levels. The car is retarded fun. Spool is very close to stock except it feels like it never stops pulling. Defiantly white knuckle driving after driving a sonata hybrid for 8 weeks

quick question, if need be ill ask in the tech forums. I am not running into boost tapper at high RPMS obviously, I am just not hitting target boost levels. If the exhaust is forcing the wastegate open will a heavier spring help the issue? SteamSpeed is helping me out here before I drop another 700 dollars on EWG setup. They are sending me a 1.2 bar, 1.4 bar, and a 1.6bar spring.

EDIT: I also thought about how much oil i was bypassing during the ringland issue, and how long i drove the car like that, so i took apart my 3 Port EBCS and cleaned out the carbon and what oil i found. Ill be taking the car out for a data log tomorrow morning ill keep you guys updated.

Couldn't wait, went out to do a quick drive. This seems to have fixed the issue, BUT I am not sure if I am overboosting or not. I am using the AP right now for a boost gauge and its reading 22.95 pretty consistently. My issue is, it feels in the seat of the pants like 8-10 more psi over my 19.6 instead of 3-3.5, although I have never driven a car in E85 before. The tuner did say if we made up the boost it would probably be 40 HP and TQ more. The inside of the boost controller was very nasty FWIW.

I ensured all the hoses are connected correctly after the first pull because it reminded me of the first time I blew the hose off of the turbo inlet housing before the rebuild

I hope you're right and this thing makes serious power. I was eyeing the stx71 as the "next step" if I build the engine, and if I remember correctly the specs advertised this should be closer to 500whp
