Default Inexpensive mount + balance

Seeing the *ahem* other thread about mounting and balancing of tires, I decided to share my recent good (and bad) experience with a local shop.

I picked up some snows for the wagon because I want the best winter performance I can get, right? Call around - get quoted as much as $160 for a mount and balance - of 205/55/16's of all things.

However, I called a recommended installer (recommended on TireRack) - ProImports in Gaithersburg (autopark drive). They specialize mainly in Audi, BMW and VW, but are getting into more Subie tuning, apparently. Anyway, it's just a mount and balance...

$72 out the door (I kept the old tires, saved $12 recycling fee) BUT they missed removing the stock edge-clip wheel weights on two of the rims. Scratched around 3/4 of the wheel (to the metal, very fine scratch).

At invoice time, the owner walked me out, pointed out the damage, explained that this has never happened before (no reason not to believe him), and proceeded to offer me options to take care of it. I'm waiting to have the wheels refinished and if the color doesn't match they will be buying me new wheels. He even entered it into the computer, printed out on my invoice.

I wanted to share my good impression of the shop, run in a very professional manner, with a comfortable and VERY clean office and lounge area (free wireless, plasma tv). I guess they have a pretty good reputation in the VW world with their own turbo kit...

I'm in no way associated with this place, just had a good experience (minus the scratching bit). If anything, the bad experience (scratching) just reinforced my confidence in their professionalism. And if someone wants a reasonably-priced tire mounting, this may be a place to investigate.

Any shop will make mistakes, it's how they handle it shows how good the shop is.
