Question am I going to need lowjack?

I have been told that the WRX is going to be a hot item among thieves....ala accord or civic si. Anyone else heard about this. The dealer wants me to have them install lowjack on the new car. Sure I want to protect the car; but lowjack? I don't know. Any Advice?

If somebody stole my car, I'd hope that the police never recovered it! Who knows what they did to it when they had it. Once had a friend that had their Toyota van stolen, & when the cops gave it back to them, there was blood all over the seats.

60% of stolen cars are recovered. The longer they have it, the more damage gets done. Something to consider...

You won't want the car back if it becomes that popular to steal for parts.....

I wouldn't want it back if it was stolen either. I'd rather get the insurance money and buy a new one. If it was recovered, I'd sell it.

I agree, my Honda Accord was stolen....and police told me that 85% of cars are recovered. I'm soooo glad it never turned up.

I recommend some kind of mechanical device to lock the car. I use the Disklok (www.disklok.com) which is very hard to bypass and is very visible. You can't bypass it by snipping the wheel and it's been proven effective by many magazines and agencies. It will also protect that pretty WRX Momo steering wheel from being taken.

Personally I wouldn't want my car back either. But if you did I think lojack is too limited. It only works in certain states, the range is limited and in my area it's tough to find many crusiers with the tracking device installed. I would go with something like Alpine's Mayday GPS system.
But that's just me. I`d rather focus on them not getting it in the first place. Wishful thinking I know.

Has anyone seen those things (I forget what they are called) that look like "the club" but you put them on the brake or clutch pedal? I saw it on an infomercial. Looks like that may work.

Since we are on the subject. Do alarms really keep people from stealing you car? If this car is as popular with thieves as the ITR will the unexperienced car thief see the alarm but the pro get it anyway? What about ignition kill or something? My friend has this plug that is under his steering wheel, if it is out the car will not start. Would something like that be good or can the good thieves bypass it?

I'm not going to put a stereo in or any speakers, it will look mostly stock but I may put some STI or sparco seats in, harness bar with dual 5 pt harnesses, gauge pod. Mostly performance stuff. I don't think anyone would want to steal that except for the seats.

How to protect your car?

Get a garage. Most thefts are overnight jobs, with the car stolen from streetside.

I've got a garage at my home, and my workplace has a secured parking area. That covers my car for >95% of the time.

Low Jack has the thing were the car won't start without unlocking the car. Even if you have the key. But there is also a way to bypass. But it's very hard to do.

The thing that Akiata is referring to is the autolock http://www.autolock.com/ which locks one pedal.

You can also buy a Bullock which locks the clutch and brake together.

The most effective mechanical steering wheel lock is one called the AutoLok 2000 which is hard to remove and immune to wheel snipping since it covers part of the wheel. But it may not fit thick rimmed wheels. http://www.chaseatlantic.com/autolok2.htm This lock was rated the highest by a UK magazine.

As I mentioned the Disklok is the one I use, it fits loosely thus doesn't damage your wheel and covers the whole wheel. And it's immune to cutting of the steering wheel.

The trick about keeping your car is to make it look tough to steal in the first place. A mechanical device like the Disklok looks and is tough to bypass so you're covered from any but the most determine thieves. If they can bypass any of the aforementioned products, then an alarm is not going to stop them either.
