Looking to make SOME improvement on factory STI stereo, as cheap as possible.
Just looking for a little more clarity, and a little more volume. I have always had way expensive stereo's and I got tired of having to worry about it, having to screw with it, and the weight. Honestly I am MOSTLY happy with the stock STI stereo, I just would like a little more clarity, and a little more ooph.
I have my old Alpine CD/MP3/XM deck that I will throw in, and I am looking for a slight, but as cheap as possible speaker upgrade. Now, we all know Audiobahn is garbage But, I found this on Ebay, I gotta think they are SOMEWHAT better than the stock speakers. Its only just over $50 shipped... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MakeTrack=true what do you think? I know they are junk in the grand scheme of things, but for $50, and they gotta be better than the stock speakers.

For the price range, and the fact that you are using HU power (I would assume), I always recommend Infiniti Reference series coax. You should be able to get a pair of them for about the same price on eBay.
BTW (even though it's you Dave) I will let you know that I am about to unleash some organized FAQ type resources on the Car Audio section in the next couple days. If you already know some car audio stuff you could skim most of it; but it will have all the resources for Subie specific installs listed as well. offset |

They also make a 6002is or si version which is the same speaker, only not as deep. I am going to go for some component speakers in my new rex though. |

If you ever plan on adding an amp, yeah, get components. As far as the tweeters, there's nothing wrong with the door handles. I have mine on my dash now, and besides the pain running wires up there, they sound a lot better, IMO. |

For an IMPROVEMENT over stock, get the infinity. Unless you have the money to spend and want better sound, buy some components and an amp. |

I agree with the others, get some components if you plan on geting atleast an amp for the doors. If you want a good speaker thats relatively cheap, I would recommend infinity. I have 4 6.5 inch speakers that really kick. I'm still in the process of the install, very complicated since the back doors dont hold 6.5. Their kappa and reference series speakers are good, but if you decide to get an amp, get the perfects, they are what the name says. A good site to check out is http://www.etronics.com best prices I've found on almost any site, http://thezeb.com is also good.

Those audiobahn are only a 2 1/4 mounting depth. Stick a small spacer in there and you are good to go with those.

These Infinitys are the cheapest I would recommend for components:
http://www.cardomain.com/item/INFREF6000CS Otherwise, these CDTs seem to be perpetually on sale: http://www.thezeb.com/p-CDT-Audio-CL...tem-101083.htm Oh, and if you're amping them, add in sound deadening to that cost, or else it'll just be a lot of bum bum boom rrrrrrrrrrtttttt. |

Yes they will. Here's a pretty good guide to speaker fitment:

how cheap?
For cheap components I like thepolk momo they are about 100 bux or for a few bucks more right now I am running the old Kicker resolution componentsclick here and am very happy with them. they are about 20 bux more. The CDT fit with a 3/4 inch spacer. |

On those infinity's can you mount the reference 6002si's without a spacer in the front of an 02 WRX? I see a bunch of stuff on ebay for cheap!

The infinitys need a spacer for mounting purposes, not as a depth issue. You could make spacers from some left over wood though, it's not tricky.

6002i 6002si - shallow The will both meet my sound and price needs but if I have to make a spacer for both, might as well go with the 6002i, right? |

probably. One of the ways that many of the shallow speakers are made shallow is by flattening out the cone a bit which can make it less stiff and more prone to distortion. Another popular way is to make the magnet structure smaller which will limit your excursion as the voice coil gap becomes shorter. Based on the better power handling it sound like they have at least applied the smaller motor assembly method.
I dunno how the Infinity's do it, and I don't care to look, but its something to think about. |

What about just adding a sub to the stock system w/ an amp, and getting some bass blockers for the 4ch?
