32" tall tires, 4WD, full tank of fuel.

Plenty of food, DVDs, Xbox etc. As long as I keep power, I'm golden.

I do have a power outlet in the bed. Just run an extension cord up to the 3rd floor.

Meanwhile, people out west are laughing at the all out panic taking place on the east coast over 1'-2' feet of snow. Grocery stores are out of food and gas stations' tanks are empty. Ridiculous.

I never understood why people panic so much. Everything will be normal again by prob Saturday/Sunday. People can't go 2 days without a fully stocked fridge??

I'm heading out in about 15 minutes. What normally takes me an hour and ten minutes to get to work will probably be two hours this morning.

I heard some people have already resorted to cannibalism just to stay alive.

Because a storm as potentially strong as this one has the ability to cause problems for more than a few days. After last years storm on Halloween it's easy to see why people would rather be prepared than not.

I'm on call for storm duty as we speak. I'm ready for any tree emergency around Everett.

There is a difference between being prepared and a complete over reaction. And typically being prepared means NOT having to go out last minute.

Well there's also supposed to be 25-30 mph winds with gusts up to 60mph (in CT). Maybe not hurricane strength, but in conjuction with snow, it could do some significant damage to power lines. Around me, people love their trees so much and don't want the road edges to be cleared, so trees overhang powerlines even on major roads. Both Sandy and Irene dropped a whole bunch of trees just on my road. After Sandy, I actually couldn't go more than 100 yards out of my driveway in either direction without hitting a big tree on one side or a downed power line on the other.

It's also below freezing, so it's probably a good idea to have a generator at least to heat the house to keep the pipes from freezing. We don't have one.

I went out last night and got gas for my generator, and did an oil change on that pig too.

At the time I lived in Hampton Beach, NH. On a dead-end street that wasn't plowed. Out of college a couple years, a buddy and I had a winter rental.

Went up to the beach early in the morning and the wind was blowing so hard that even with goggles on, we couldn't face the wind as the sand was blasting the remaining exposed skin. And although high tide wasn't for four hours, the waves were already within a few feet of the road.

WBCN went off the air mid-morning so we tuned into the Portsmouth rock station. The first message we heard was an evacuation warning for all residents of coastal areas. While we were deciding what to do, we started to see water coming up from the marsh behind us. Couldn't get our cars out so we walked down to the police/fire station with a duffle bag of extra clothes.

The previous night the police dept on the first floor had already flooded. We moved up to the second floor and a bunch of us sat there as the tide came up. There was a Toyota Corolla in the back lot and at the height of the tide, it was under water up to the roof. After a couple hours the tide came down and a school came to the station. We entered it through the back door as there was still a couple of feet of water. They took us to the Middle school.

We had little desire to live in a middle school gym for days. A buddy lived in N Hampton and was home alone as his parents were up in Jackson. We stopped at the local Cumbarland Farms to buy a case of beer, then stuck out our thumbs to hitch a ride N on Route 1.

Well, we would have stuck out our thumbs - except there weren't any cars. Back before the Nuke there were no more than a couple hundred people living in Hampton Beach over the winter, and not much traffic. Finally a pickup truck came by. He had two people in the cab and a load of firewood in the bed, but offered to take us anyway. He dropped us off and we hunkered down with our bud.

The power went off an hour or two later an was off for the next tw days. His parents had a freezer in the basement and his parents had previously told him to "start eating" if the power went out. After the first 24 hours we'd eaten all the bread and cold cuts and opened up the freezer. It was full of steaks and peas. So for the next two days we drank and ate steaks and peas. We spent our time listening to the radio and swapping lies. When the snow finally stopped, we went to the garage to fire up the snow thrower and clear the driveway. When we pulled open the door, the snow drift was up to my chest - and I'm 6'2.

My gf at the time went to UNH and lived in a house in Newmarket. So she picked me up and I stayed there Thursday - Sunday. So CN: I spent the Blizzard of '78 drinking beer, eating steaks and peas, and having sex.

Sunday afternoon we drove back to the beach. We had to show ID to National Guardsmen stationed to prevent looting at the beach. They had finally plowed the road. Both our cars had been flooded by salt water up to about two feet. I was able to start mine once but it would not restart and was totaled. I got a rental car and as work was still closed, wen skiing at Waterville Valley. There was hardly anyone there as there was a driving ban in MA. I did see some buddies from Andover who got up at 2am and took off for the border - they passed a MSP trooper asleep in his cruiser and made the border.

Another buddy got trapped on 128 and spent 15 hours in his car before being evacuated to a hotel. He walked and hitched rides back to his house in RI. Yet another buddy was a plowing contractor in Boston so he had a special pass to drive around. He had an MGB with snow tires so he was driving around Boston checking on his guys. He got stopped by every cop who saw him, but was good to go.

P.S. First snowflakes spotted in Boston at 10am.

I remember. Living out in western Mass, we always feel like the entire govt focuses on Boston and ignores everything in the 413 area code. Well, they did in 78, closing the state and declaring a state of emergency for the whole state. Turnpike was officially closed. Community college where I was going was closed. Driving in my 69 Ford van, I turned around and went home.....put my skis in the truck and drove out to Jiminy Peak in the berkshires (turnpike was free) and skied all day. Drove home without a problem. I did have snows and some minor extra weight added in the back (lincoln arc welder, 5 mounted wheels/tires....)

^^ Good stuff, would read again.

All I remember about that storm is being pretty small and the massively tall snow. And making an igloo out of a snow pile.
