Default SO i am doing my own first tranny fluid change little help please

Well i am doing my first change on the transmission, fluid for the first time and i am wondering what is a good.
Fluid to go with ? i have very little grind, up shifting into 4th from 3rd very minor i figured now, would be a good time to do it.

I would like to try and get, something local as i do not have my new bank account set up so no debit card at the moment.
Just not sure what to go with is it something, i can get at auto zone pep boys. ?

PS i hate buying things from big auto, stores but it is my only option for now and i want to do it while the car is on jacks doing my brakes, and rotors to

Thanks Ben

I know mobile 1 is not recommended for engines. But is there gear oil safe to use?

Redline lightweight shockproof works great in mine. Motul makes good product too. I almost did the 3 qt redline, 1 qt Motul mix, but I went with straight shockproof instead. 6000 miles and loving it. The mix works out good on paper and you wouldn't get stiff in the winter if we get one like last year. Andrewtech knows more about transmissions than just about anyone.

Are you changing the rear differential fluid too ? Use the same there. T70 torx bit on the transmission drain. I had to order one because none of the shops I went to in portland stocked it, I thought that was weird because I went to about 7 of them.

Valvoline synthetic 75w-90 in both the trans and rear differential.

WRX rear diff is a VLSD so it doesn't matter what brand as long as you have 75w90 in it.

The trans though is touchy. I'm doing fine with the Valvoline. Many like the Motul. My friend has used the Mobil oil and does not like it. So go figure. Others do the 'cocktail'. Stay away from Redline (I saw what it did).

My $0.02

I vote for Mobil 1 in the rear differential and Motul in the trans.

Sorry dont mean to jack your thread but this info might be of help to you too.

I did my first tranny fluid change on my 02 5mt wrx a couple weeks ago with full Motul 300 gear oil. I drained the fluid and put in 3.7 quarts of the motul 300, but after my test drive and all the dipstick still read low... i drove it around for a week and it still read low so i put in the last of the 4th bottle... drove it around and it STILL read low... i'm confused because in all the write ups i've read you're only supposed to put 3.7 quarts in the transmission....

oh and i havent seen any leaks or anything... i even torqued the drain bolt to 44ft lbs cuz there was a write up that said that. anyone know whats going on?

Motul is sold in Liter bottles, not quart bottles. Fill it up until it shows full on the dip stick.

right... but if thats the case then 1 liter = 1.05 quarts right? so that means i've put 4.2 quarts in my transmission now.... or am i mistaken?

You might have. Fill it until it shows full on the dip stick. A completely empty transmission takes a little over 4.3 quarts.

When I changed the gear oil on my 5MT, I let it drain for a long time (3 hours). One hour flat (ok my garage floor is slightly rear biased). One hour was with the rear end jacked up. One hour with the front end jacked up. After this extended drain I only had to add 3.3125 qts (3 qts 10 oz) to bring it up to the top mark on the dipstick (it's actually a hair above the top mark on the dipstick). Maybe the new 5MTs have a lower capacity than the 02s.

Well, the 75W90NS is "technically" right for our cars, but it feels terrible in a trans.

They make an MT90, which is a great fluid for a GL4, but will EAT ring and pinions for lunch.
