Default LS1 swap into BMW 3 series project

http://www.vorshlag.com/E36ProjectBook.asp

This whole swap just makes so much sense. At least read about the project. I wish all projects were organized this well.

Link is down. But, with the M3 available, how much sense does this really make?

ok, you have never driven an M3, have you. most of us M3 guys are not about the power, but the handling. and no, this swap does not make SO MUCH sense to me.

the M3 has tons of power, and the top end is amazing, and yet you can still get 23 mpg, even after running it hard. a few upgrades, and you could be pushing 350.

and that page is gay. M3 for the e36 came out in 95, with a 3.0 240 hp, then in 96 came with a 3.2.

People will swap huge motors into anything. I remember seeing an article years ago in a hot-rod type magazine about someone who had swapped a V8 into the back of a Porsche 911 as well. It looked so stupid with a big hole cut in the top of the whale tail for the velocity stacks to stick out of.

I just don't understand the fascination with messing up very nicely balanced cars like the 3-series just to try to see how much power you can get out of them.

In the article he talked about how expensive it is for engine upgrades on an E36. And everyone knows how easy it is to get serious power out of an LS1. 400whp can be attained with half a dozen mods. The LS1 is lighter and more compact as well.

Of course its not for everyone but its not like it doesn't have its merits.

it says on the site:

"After extensive measurements, it is obvious that the factory BMW 2.5-3.2L, crossflow head Inline-6 engine is MASSIVE in height, length, and width. With an iron block and uber-long crank, it is also one heavy mutha. Hell, a lightweight V8 swap could LOSE weight in this car! This is not unheard of - Ford 302's with aluminum heads, swapped into Datsun 240-280Z cars, can lose a few pounds. Cross-flow head Inline-6 engines are not at all space or weight efficient."

The car they are working on in is the VERY base 318...Of course the power to weight ratio is off.

Well, first off they are starting with a 318. What else are you going to do with one of those? Second, the article specifically mentions the engine placement and weight. The all aluminum V8 sits pretty far back compared to a long cast iron inline 6. If the regular M3 has a 50:50 weight distribution, then the LS1 might give it a rear weight bias. Think about that....a front/mid engined car with a marginal rear weight bias. That's excellent! And it might weigh less!

Things like those should improve upon the already superb handling of the 3 series chassis. Then we start to look at the power and (since you brought it up) mileage. The LS1 starts at about 300 hp and can easily be bumped up to about any output that you want. You can either supercharge it or bore and stroke it to near big block displacement (427ci). OR BOTH! The T-56 six speed should let the BMW get as good or better gas mileage than the Camaro. That tall 6th gear should allow some amazing mileage in such a light car.

If you scroll to the bottom of the page you can click on the LS1 into Miata swap. Some of the side-by-side pix showing the engines are pretty neat. That Ford mod motor is huge!

I wonder if the Hemi Magnum would fit? Hemi Miata has a nice ring to it.

I've been eagerly awaiting the completion of their project (and any parts that come out of it that would make a DIY easier). 318iA's are dirt cheap (because nobody wants them) and that chassis would be great with LS1 power and weight!

I'd consider selling my M3 if I could get a LS1 E36 running for half the price (and half the insurance price).

Plus, you could buy badges from all the BMW cars and combine them. People would wonder what the hell a "357is" is!

Very True.

A friend of mine made a kit to install the Ford Aluminum V8's into Mercur XR4-Ti's. The V8 ended up weighting quite less than the Iron inline 4. Fit perfectly as well.
