I have a 2013 WRX and use Hankook iPike studded tires. Living in Alaska, where it's winter 7 months out of the year, they are a necessity. They have great road manners, do good in deeper snow, and I have yet to lose traction with them on. Doing a lot of backcountry snowboarding on mountain roads full of snow and ice, they perform flawlessly. They seem the have good tread wear and stiffer sidewalls too. A fantastic tire and great investment that I'd recommend to anyone.

Oh how would I like to experience that one calendar year...7 months of snow, studded rubber and an STi. BOOM DONE!

Wanna switch?

Tis true. Only 90 at the pump. Pretty pathetic up here. Torco or Meth inject is pretty common.

Lots of people up here also run blizzaks and I've heard good things about them. Subarus are everywhere up here. Seems like at least 10% of all the cars on the road. I have yet to see one in the ditch during the winter. Usually those that suffer are the ones that are brand new up here who think they can get by with bald all season tires on their FWD cars. To drive safely up here it's almost essential to have them, especially with the horrible drivers.

tires only or winter package: winter wheel/tire package....

looking for winter setup for my wife's '12 Regal GS. Trying to decide if a Blizzak is needed in this area or if something like a Continental DWS might get the job done. With FWD and 295 lb-ft this car can be tricky.

Sizes would be either 245/40/19 or 255/35/20.

Tirerack claims that 18" are fine (245/45r18).
The 18" winter package starts at 1250. Larger sizes will be even more expensive.

Personally I'd get some smaller steelies and run some tires. It's easier during changeover, cheaper to initially purchase the tires, and saves your stock wheel set. Cheaper and more efficient in the long run.

yeah, but it's common knowledge that aftermarket 18s rarely clear the brembos...i guess i could call tirerack and verify.

no steelies in the buick bolt pattern that i can find (and can clear the brakes). interestingly enough i am finding that in most cases 20" snow tires are cheaper than their 19" counterparts...

That is strange. Maybe 20" are more popular.

Krzy***347;

PS GS requires huge wheels.

I have General Altimax tires on my 2005 WRX Winter rims that need to be replaced due to a bubble in one of the sidewalls. I'm torn between the Performance winter tires vs the Studless winter tires. I know the basic differences between the 2 types of winter tires, and I didn't really mind driving in the Altimax tires the past couple of years.

I've been looking at a couple including the Dunlop Winter sport 4D and the Continental ExtremeWinterContact. I guess priority would be snow traction but also everyday drive comfort/noise is important too.

I am in MA too and I like trade offs provided by performance winter tires.
We will be buying new set and we will go with 4D most likely.

What seems to be the consensus regarding best studless winter tires?

If you live east of Worcester, I'd say performance winter.

It depends on the conditions you drive in, and what your performance priorities are.

I have a 2013 WRX. Stock tire is 235/45/17. I found a set of winter tires for sale but they are 225/55/17. Would there be anything wrong with using these for my winter setup?

Thanks

225/55 is a bit too tall, it's nearly 6%. A 225/50 would be better.
