Default 2009 Lamborghini SUV

Spy Shots: 2009 Lamborghini SUV

The Audi-owned Italian sportscar maker Lamborghini is building an SUV again, it seems, from prototypes spotted in Europe.

This strange-looking Porsche Cayenne is actually a mule for the upcoming SUV by Lamborghini. Because Porsche did most of the work when developing the VW Touareg and the Audi Q7 , they also got the responsibility to develop the Lamborghini SUV.

The engine for the new ute will probably be a version of the V-10 from the Gallardo and Audi's S6 and S8 , but a 4.5-liter V-8 from the Cayenne could be available. A diesel version is also in the plans, using the 5.9-liter Audi V-12 TDI.

Between 1982 and 1993 Lamborghini built approximately 300 SUVs under the LM 002 badge. The monster SUV was powered by the V-12 from the Lamborghini Countach, making as much as 455 hp. At the time, Lamborghini's offering was seen as an oddity. But with the success that Porsche has had with the Cayenne , a Lamborghini ute doesn't seem so offbeat now.

Our photos show the SUV prototype wearing Cayenne body panels, as well as a computer image giving an artist's impression of how a future Lamborghini SUV could look.

Considering Lamborghini got their start building tractors, they have almost always had an SUV. The original LM's were monsters that put Hummers to shame.

There was a LM002 around here that was sitting unused at a foreign car repair shop for years. One day it was gone and then I saw it driving around a few times. Its still on the original Pirelli Scorpion tires. Then it was parked at a gas station again for a short while. Haven't seen it in several months.

fast/suv. the concept just doesnt make sense to me, its a complete conflict of interests. buy a cayman and use the leftover money for an explorer and enjoy both for what they were made for, not some quasi-sportscar-halfassed suv that will leave you wondering why you dont haul as much as a truck or haul as much ass as a sportscar.

The Cayenne Turbo S holds a top 10 time on the Nurburgring for a factory vehicle. Brute power & trucks go hand in hand. The reason most young rural studs are driving shortbed pickups these days is because they're the closest things to classic muscle cars that money can buy.

From the inverted strakes on the Cayenne test mule, I'm guessing that VAG has discovered that their proposed Lambo SUV body provides serious front end lift at speed. Sweet.

Well off soccermoms & trophy wives in V10 SUVs FTW!

Pfft. Just tweak the LM's looks and bring it back with a modern interior and powertrain.

If you consider a top speed of 78 (maybe it was 82?) MPH crazy fast.

Quick, possibly. Fast? Not a chance. Comical in the corners? Most definitely.

While the idea of a Lambo version of the Cayenne S is mildly interesting, it seems to me that Lambo is a bit late to the party. The SUV boom is pretty much over.

And I agree that people should be more concerned with buying a regular SUV, and getting a sports car instead of wasting money on a sport-SUV. No matter how fast a Cayenne S or Grand Cherokee SRT-8 may be.

As inclined as I am to actually believe that, I simply don't. I'd be really interested to see a source for that, seeing as I can easily name 10 vehicles that almost definitely lap faster.

Seven of which are Porsche 911's (The S, S Cabriolet, 4S, 4S Cabriolet, Targa 4S, Turbo, and GT3.). Add in cars like the Z06, Viper, S8, S6, RS4, virtually every AMG Mercedes, M5, M6, Evo FQ-400, etc. and I don't see how the Cayenne Turbo S could possibly hold a top 10 spot. Hell I'd even expect lesser cars like the C6 Corvette, Boxster S, Cayman S, regular 911s, Skyline GT-Rs, M3 CSL, Elise, and Exige to lap the 'Ring faster. That's not even counting exotics. Even if it could marginally outhandle a lot of those cars, their average speed on the Nurburgring straightaway alone would reel in the Cayenne with it's 168mpg top speed.

I'm not discounting the possibility entirely, but I just highly doubt it.

Also, where do you find the list of fastest lap times on the Ring anyway? I've searched before and not found anything.

Edit: Well, I found a decent list on Wikipedia. I don't see the Turbo S anywhere in it and indeed most all of the cars I mentioned are. Not sure how up to date it is, and even when you cull all the tuner and exotic cars off it it, you get a lot of fast times for production cars.

I recall that Cayenne article, the car was far from stock. It was shaped like a Cayenne, but had a thumper of an engine in it. Just like the when BMW put the X5 on the Ring with an F1 V10. It set a record as the fastest SUV on the ring. Probably Porsche and BMW are going to duke it out in THAT catagory

Me too.. now that I'm looking for it. I'm either helping to spread a rumor or it's a very contrived statistic. All I can find is that it is the fastest SUV on the ring , but no mention of an actual lap time.

[edit]thanks SCRAPPY.. at least I don't feel crazy...alone.[/edit]
