Personally, I wouldn't want it as a primary car, or for that matter a secondary car, as regularly I need more space. As a toy, it would be good, great with a few mods.

quentinberg007, I now think it would have lived up to its marketing and hype with better tires, brakes, and of course, a little more power. Before, I was skeptical, even of that.
If only there was some way to get new tires, brake pads, and power...

Which is why I won't spend $27K+ on a toy I have to spend more money on to make right.

Make it right for you. Most (not all) magazines have been happy with the stock performance of these cars.

All the things the car comes with why is it so hard to add a few more things? Its a beautiful car... i am about to drop 5k-7k in parts on my sti, not because it worth it, but its because i love the car and want to make it better. Modding is a culture, want to buy a car with everything, well your in the wrong bracket... you need to spend about 80k+ if you want a car that you wont have to or want to spend more money on.... but hey people still do it!

Then get the Scion version and spend the money saved on the Subaru to upgrade brakes, tires and make some power.

That is actually a pretty decent way to think about it.

Either he knows a guy that knows a guy that knows a guy, or he's just actually old enough (and somehow nice enough) to have enough friends to where law of averages would dictate that SOMEONE around him would purchase a BRZ and also care about him enough to allow him to drive it.

Would I trust someone so ancient behind the wheel of my new sports car? No, but that's probably just me.

A test mule whose weight, balance, suspension, and etc all just happen to be a very close match for the next WRX? The test mules for the BRZ were all frankensteins in order to simulate all of the above characteristics of the production BRZ. The hood scoop set up looks very much like pre-production runs of the scoop/splitter. Face it, the next WRX is going to be based on the current Impreza... Maybe some different body panels for fender flares and maybe more upgraded interior... But mules being what they are, this is very strong indicator the new WRX is based off the Impreza.

Going out on a limb here, but could this not just be a mule for the turbo FB power train in general? For the impreza turbo models and the grossly underpowered xv perhaps?

Nope, anything you do won't be covered by the warranty.

I modded when I was young, my first "tuned" 4 cylinder was in 1972, and the warranty thing.

Nope, if I were to buy a toy for a weekend car, I want all the bells and whistles, plus I am very loyal to Subaru.

HAHA! Such a good sport. Don't worry, I let a lot of people drive my WRX until I had to replace the clutch (first time ever in any car in my life). Although I trusted it wasn't abused and suspected it was faulty (it always stuck kinda funny), I stopped letting so many people drive it to lower the liability.

With my new car I might be nicer and let others drive it since it won't have a turbo or AWD. We shall see...

Maybe Subaru's fooling all of us, and this is the turbo parallel hybrid in testing.

I've wondered since the BRZ was officailly announced as a RWD coupe if some WRX development, engine, suspension parts, chassis, interiors, body designs, ect. could have been going on in conjunction with the BRZ, but so much attention was given to the BRZ that no one noticed. Of course, I am old and my mind wanders/wonders all the time.

Think about it. Since Toyota apparently put up most the development money, why not use it to develop parts that could be used in other models? Subaru has already said that without the BRZ a new WRX/STI couldn't happen. Maybe Subaru meant they now had more of their own R&D money available for WRX/STI development..

I think the context was that if Subaru had to R&D BRZ entirely on their own, they wouldn't have R&D budget left for WRX/STI, in response to people wondering why Subaru didn't go it alone on the RWD coupe. If Subaru had to choose between developing a BRZ or continuing WRX/STI, they're going to choose WRX/STI. Having Toyota as a partner on the RWD coupe allowed them to do both things.

Maybe we're saying the same thing here.

This is what I believe. I can NOT imagine Subaru giving up WRX/STI for anything like a BRZ.

I could, everyone is out to make money. If it came down to subaru making more money investing in other models by dropping the wrx and sti... than its a logical choice. Toyota did it long ago with the supra. Nissan also did it. Not saying they ever would, but i believe it boils down to what makes them money.

I'm not quite as wise as you, but I modded my first 4 cylinder when I was about 16 (interestingly, it was a horizontally opposed 4 cylinder, and I bet a lot of us not so young folk cut their teeth on a boxer before eventually ending with Subaru's version of the boxer), and that was more moons ago than I care to admit, but less moons than you have admitted to!

I'm certainly not as crazy as I used to be when it comes to modding, but I just can't leave well enough alone, but age has taught me how much I really 'need' to have fun and enjoy the drive, and I don't waste my time with the other crap.

I'm not quite sure why you put 'tuned' in quotes, I'd say the laptop tuning done today isn't quite the same as twiddling set screws on dual carbs so each bank of cylinders is running as close as possible to the same fuel mixture, that took talent, luck and a fair bit of hard lessons. tuning these days, well, it's more precise, and certainly the hard lessons are there to learn, but you don't have to be quite as lucky, or talented, just experienced and good with math.

Now that I think about it and you reminded me about it I did miss with a VW bug in the late sixties. I quoted tuned because that and modding are pretty much the same to me, but not to others. But you are right...sixties tuning and 2010 tuning are two different things.
