my questions before hand....

on a stock motor at say 20 lbs is this turbo choice to large for reliability???
i understand the inharent risk. but has anyone had good luck on the stock motor with these.
any other suporting mods anyone suggests?
any other opinions???

i know if the delayed spool etc. mainly looking for reliability info here. thanks ahead of times for all constructive help and opinions.

Your real weak point will be your transmission. If it were me, id do a 16g xt or (if out yet)16g xtr. And if available e85 or meth injection. If youre stuck on the two above, 20g, 3port, ewg, and wrap everything to help all you can with spool. Ive seen so much dissapountment with the 18g on the two liter. Good luck.

I have the three port already sorry i forgot to say that. But is most likely run an external gate... I know the spool is much worse. But my goal is 345 to the wheels... A 16g would be run ragged to get that...i am thinking 18g... The motor hold up with a good tune though. That's my big issue

What dyno are you trying to hit this number. Ive just never really been a big fan of the 18g and I feel, if your going to do it the 20g shouldnt be a whole lot laggier than the 18. A 16g xt on e85 or meth will get you those numbers. And have only read minimal stuff about the 16g xtr, but I think it would have no problems at 345.

Yeah my tuner told me that I could get anywhere from 300-350hp to the wheels with a 16gxt bigger tmic, bigger injectors( 700cc-1,000cc) and the walbro 255 fuel pump. The first thing they asked me when I told them I wanted more power was how often I was going to use the car?(03 Wrx)
When I told them it was my daily driver they told me that setup above would be perfect!!!

Ok then maybe a 16g might be perfect then... I'd love the fast spool. Just don't want to run the turbo hard all the time.... Thanks every one.

Ps e85 isn't an option... And Meg injection isn't really either... I don't want to have to fill a bottle up every few days to keep my car safe and e85 isn't around here.... central pa...

Yeah they said that the 16g will be plenty fast spool times and yeah I agree with you, I live near Philly and they don't have it many places here either

And who says running a turbo "hard" is bad? I ran my stock turbo at 22PSI for more years than you were in high school and it is still running fine on a buddy's car for the last 3 years.

Unabomber: how exactly did you run that much boost on a td04? Ebcs, bigger injectors, fuel pump, ewg, etc? When Ben tuned my car I think he said that my injectors, fp, and wg were at 98%+ duty cycle. I may be wrong though, it's been a good while since he's tuned it though...

I currently have a vf39 on my 03 wrx, before this setup, I had an evo3 16g, which the 16g xt replaced. I was right around 340 at the wheels and it spooled even a little quicker than my vf. I have modified stock injectors at 820cc, big top mount, walbro, 3port ebcs and all the usual stage 2 stuff. I loved that turbo and if my car is still running when my vf goes, I will be on the hunt for another one. I understand about not wanting to get into meth, it does seem like a hassle. but you would be surprised about how much is actually used under boost and most modern systems have safety shut offs where if something goes wrong or the system runs empty, your boost is cut to wastegate spring pressure. I'm not by any means trying to sell you on it, I have never run it my car or know what its like to live with every day, but I have run e85 in my subaru so the the meth is always tempting now that I don't live near e85. let us know the outcome of your build!

The 16gxt is basically an old 18g but with better aero, it spools faster and offers more power than an old 18g. So, buy that. The 16gxtr will have even better spool and transient response if maybe slightly less top end.

An old school 20g was only 44lb/min (440chp), the 16gxt is 41lbs/min (410chp), so your talking more power under the curve and a loss of 30hp up top. The new technology turbos are drastically better than the older ones provided better power and response everywhere. Now, I would say the 18gxtr and 20gxtr are going to be a little to big for the 2.0. Particularly without a fully built engine.

Looks like i under estimated the 16g. Sounds like a good option for me i suppose... Think the stock long block will hold up though...? That's the big concern

Running a turbo at the very edge of its efficiency level can't be good over an intended time.. Don't care what anyone says... It's just something i don't want to do....

Its a gamble every time you mod a car. I blew my stock engine (rod through the block) with a small 16g (35lb/min). Just make sure to tell your tuner to keep it super safe and go to the best tuner you can find, even if it means driving a couple states away. I've learned that lesson.

If your truly worried about the engine blowing and don't have the funds on hand to repair it if it goes, don't put a bigger turbo on.

I too have made that mistake. My local tuner blew the last block, just got back from Cobb Plano, well worth the trip.

Do the 20G - great turbo on a 2.0, don't be scared, stick to recommends from people who have run it.

Ive done a TD04,VF39, both IWG and EWG and a 16G all on pump 93, pump 93+ meth and E85, also run a TD06 8cm 20G IWG on 93 and E.

20G for the 2.0 hands down as long as you have a decent tune ;-)

I have a td06 20g on my bugeye also fmic, 900cc injecters and a walbro 255, cold air intake, full turbo back exauhst. I have 112,000 miles on it and im running 19psi on stock internals. 350hp. Boost comes on late..like 4500 rpm on a day thats not terribly hot, but when it does its like freight train. Pulls hard and all the way to redline

I have a ppg gearbox lol i ask myself the same question but i havent had any problems with engine performance whatsoever. And even more suprising. It is a godspeed turbo. It has atleast 12,000 miles on it and its still pullin strong. No shaft play either
