Question Subaru Baja Speakers

Hello everybody,

I just bought a yellow Subaru Baja yesterday. I want to get after market speakers for my car. Does anybody know what speaker size would fit here ? My car did not come with tweeters. So, if I buy after market tweeters where can I fit them ? What is the best place to fit a subwoofer or is buying a subwoofer sold by Subaru my best bet ?

Thanks

i'm not much of a stereo expert but i'd go with the subaru subwoofer espisilly in the baja because it's flat and goes under the passangers seat if you were to buy an aftermarket one you would have to seal off the bed or do some heavy modifications inside and would either loose the use of the back seat.. you could probably order the tweeters from subaru too... if not the actual things you could at least get the housings for them and put them in the stock locations

I have the premium stereo whichi includes the subwoofer. The performance of the subwoofer is wonderful and produces a booming bass. The subwoofer can be purchased separately and you can probably install it yourself. I agree with Dave_T that it is probably your only option for a subwoofer since it perfectly fits beneath the passenger seat.

Thanks you. I think I will agree with you guys because I too can't think of fitting after market woofer and tweeters anywhere else.

I am thinking of after market speakers also. Crutchfileld.com says I need 6 1/2" speakers and bestbuy.com say I need 5 1/2" speakers. I am confused. Anybody knows the exact size ?

Thanks again Dave_t and RWS_BajaTurbo.

Default Subaru Baja Speakers

The tweeter kit from Subaru fits nicely and brings out the trebles and sounds great, Easy to install.I would go with the factory upgraded speakers are much better build quality than the stock speakers, plus they will fit like factory with no problems. They are easy to install. The Subaru subwoofer is nice but the harness can be a pain.If you get one the instructions tell you to pull the radio and console panels to install the harness. You don't have to do that. You take and pull the pins inside the glove box so the door will swing down. Then remove the side panel of the console which is right beside the glove box door that is now hanging down. Now you should be able to reach through the hole to the back of the radio and unplug it .Feed the harness up there and plug it in the radio, then plug the radio harness to the sub harness. It takes a skinny arm and its kinda hard but you use one hand to plug the radio and sub harness together. It can be done. Then tuck the harness under and along side the console to the side of the pass seat. Then mount the subwoofer to the seat bolt and your done.

Look at the Kenwood wOOx subwoofer. There is a thread in the audio visual forum that address the issues of a sub woofer under the passanger seet. That way you don't have to seal off the pass through and/or any crazy custom installs. I have been told that the sound is great, bot ausome, but a lot better than the OEM sub.

Check out this place. They sell both the speakers (6-1/2", by the way) as well as the Factory installation guides (FREE) to put anything in.

Default Speaker Issues

I just replaced my '03 Baja with an '04 Turbo. I had an aftermarket xm-head unit in the '03, and I had it put in the '04. The '04 has the a-pillar mounted tweeters in it already, yet no factory subwoofer. I checked around extensively, yet found no viable aftermarket subs that mount underseat, so I bought two factory subs, had them mounted under each front seat, and now I'm going to have a guy retro-fit some nice co-axials in the rear doors, along with a set of component speakers he found that will fit within the limited depth confines of the doors. He's also going to install an amp behind the rear seat, in an area that I hope won't interfere with stowage of gear, or interfere with the switchback door. I'm anxious to hear the twin subs and up-graded speakers. I'll submit a critique when all of this work is done. I have to say that the turbo is so-o-o-o much better than the '03 was. I can actually merge into traffic now. I'm a bit concerned about the Baja's future, given the niche it occupies, yet check out all of the weird stuff other automakers are putting out there at the Detroit auto show this year!

Hi urabus04,

I test drove the 04 turbo Baja. It definetly has a lot of power. I ended up buying the 03 model because of $$$ constraints.

I am installing Alpine head unit and Alpine amp. The alpine is basically to drive the 4 JBL speakers I will be installing. I am also going with a factory subwoofer.

Now this factory sub has a build in amplifier and I just need to feed the pre-amp subwoofer output from my head unit. Am I right ?

Yeah, definitely, it will work. I made the mistake of having two subwoofers ( factory type) installed under each front seat. Unfortunately, no room for any size amp, or my XM receiver is left anywhere in the vehicle, save for the glove box! I'm probably going to have to have one of the subs removed to accomodate an amp, then jettison the "up-graded" door speakers for some real speakers. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Hey Subaru- engineer some extra space, please!

Urabus04, You say you have dual factory subwoofers installed. I've been thinking of doing the same. Did you just plug the two harnesses together? Is that possible without blowing a fuse?

I've heard of people doing the dual facotry sub installs, shouldn't be a problem as honestly the factory sub doesn't really put out that much and therefor won't draw that much.

If you're more mechanically adept/inclined you could build your own box and put it between the back seat and the switchback like I did. Only after I got so far along I decided to remove the switchback door (2 bolts) and make a decently sized sealed enclosure that can handle anything I throw at it.

Trust me when I say - I'm glad I went this way instead of with the factory option!

Just to see how it would work, I switched the factory sub from under my front passenger seat to under the driver's seat. The only differences were:

1) For some reason, the space between the seat mount rail and the floor was smaller on the driver's side, and the plastic clip on the end of the wiring harness wouldn't fit through. I just ran the harness under the front of the seat. Barely noticeable, not a problem.
2) The mounting bracket for the sub was shaped wrong to work on the driver's side. It took about 2 minutes and a pair of pliers to bend and reshape the bracket. No problem.
3) The piece of plastic that covers the seat mount bolt wouldn't go back on once the sub was installed, as it wouldn't slip between the sub and the mounting rail. So I just left it off. Again, not a problem, except for it looks a little different, but not bad.
4) The top right corner of the rear driver's side floor mat covers the bracket slightly, so it is raised about 1/8" to 1/4". Barely noticeable, and not a problem. Actually, the vibration from the sub travels through the bracket to the rubber mat and you can feel it in your feet when you're sitting back there.

As soon as I get the $ saved up I'm going to get another factory sub for under the passenger seat. I'm pleased with the performance and ease of installation. I don't want bass that rattles my dental work and causes the screws in my ride to come loose, I don't want to build a box for the rear center console, and I want to keep the pass through switchback option for behind the seat. It seems like the easiest, cheapest way to upgrade the bass in the Baja.

Ben

Default Subwoofer

Has anyone tried gutting the factory sub enclosure and reinstalling a better woofer inside it, then wiring that to a larger amp? I'm thinking of trying that once I actually get my car in. As well as putting an amp in under the driver's seat and running four new Infinity 6-1/2" 2-ways in the doors. Yes, unfortunately there's little space to work with here. I've got two Polk 10" subs in a large bandpass box that will be unemployed once the Scooby comes in.

Default Factory sub and after market head unit.

Hello,

I finally installed an after market head unit and the factory subwoofer. The subwoofer now does not work. My dealer and and the installer at Circuit city have no clue how to connect the subwoofer pre-amp from the after market head unit to the subwoofer. They say the wiring harness with the factory subwoofer will work only with the factory head unit. Do any of you have any idea how to connect the pre-amp subwoofer output to the factory subwoofer.

I will greatly appreciate any information.

Thanks !

I had no problem connecting the factory sub to an aftermarket head unit. The only bad thing is that the sub is tied to the from speakers. If you like to turn down the front speakers you loose some power to the sub. I'd like to install a single amp for just the sub and connect it to my head units sub out but I'm not sure where to find a physicaly small amp that would have enough power for the sub. I you look around the audio board I'm sure you'd find the wiring diagram for the sub.

So you kept the seat and removed the door in front of it?

Was the box a prefab or did you do it?

I built it. Removed the door, coated the entire rear half of the box with clear silicone to seal it from weather/rain. The clearances were snug without the carpet but it got pretty tight after I carpeted it. But the rear seat folds and snaps shut - latched.

A pic of my subwoofer setup. If you need more info or specs just give me a PM and I'll be glad to provide more info. Also, don't focus too much on the rear door speakers. They do nothing for the sound imaging in the car and don't provide enough bass to add any low end sound. Skip 'em and spend that money on a really good set for the fronts with an amp. Absolutely use sound deadening on the doors and you'll be pleased with the sound.

Gregmatic, does your setup interfere with the rear seat bottoms folding forward so you can use the switchback?

Yes it does but it can be adjusted. There are two screws that hold on the back of the center console and if you remove those the last 3 inches of the console just pop off. Then the seat flips forward with no obstruction. It actually was planned that way as I very rarely use the pass through...

*dredging up an old thread*

I have an older amp in these pics, the newer one is of the same year, only puts out 400w rms & 2ohm and it's physically larger. Same subs. Just measured today @ 130db with zero distortion. Not bad for a system built around SQ.
