... yeay it's a "wagon" again. and return of the roof rails. It sorta looks like the trunk is extended back to the GD days. Maybe now that they don't have to comply with "short length" for WRC.

I hate to say it but the hatch looks better than I expected, sans roof-racks. It's still got some strange issues with the rear lights and those mirrors are f-ugly. People keep saying it is for side visibility but I have never found myself saying "gee, those side mirrors are really obscuring my vision of the road". Never.

Hopefully, Subaru cleans up the front grill, loses the Chrylser big chunky grill bits and go more with a mesh like the latests WRX and STI.

I'd love to see Subaru unify the STI line and bring the JDM-spec motor over here, hopefully with DI and twin-scroll. I'm sure with the appropriate tuning we would see good numbers for people with 91 and for those with access to real gas, we'd get a nice amount of power and higher revs.

It's strange because the general consensus seems to be that the Evo has a worse interior than any Impreza from '04-'11; the Evo X interior certainly looked worse than my '05 or '08 when I sat in one. The only thing it has going for it are the seats and even those are function over quality.
I believe that JC is the one who was so hung up on the one-piece plastic door cards in the GH/GR back in '07... then I think he sat in one at a dealership and couldn't find the seat height adjustment so he started complaining about the cowl being so high and it being like sitting in a deep bathtub made of cheap plastic. The only complaints regarding the interior of the actual owners of GH/GR Imprezas that I've heard are from people who dislike the rattles and can't be bothered to take 5 min to glue a piece of felt between the A-pillar and dash panel.. and the folks who got the bad batch of interior trim where the paint was flaking off (replaced under warranty). The interior was my favorite part of my Imprezas.. it didn't rattle (after I took the 5min to fix it), it was functional and it was spacious. Sightlines were pretty good too. Everyone of my friends and family that got into the cars commented on how nice they were.

That's cool.

"Sport" is the 5-door model. The "Limited" versions get moonroof as options for this year.

Upper models get 17" wheels. Are the 17" wheels new for base Imprezas?

FYI Autoblog has shots of the Impreza 5-door, without roof rails etc.

at first glance it seems less chunky than the OBS.

yes my guess is Wrx will be DI 2.0 turbo, thats where everybody else is going. They can easily get 240-260 hp out of that engine.

New York 04/20/2011:
2012 Subaru Impreza takes title for being most efficient AWD car in America
Posted: 20 Apr 2011 01:23 PM PDT

2011 New York: 2012 Subaru Impreza

Subaru debuted its all-new next-generation Impreza today at the 2011 New York Auto Show. Featuring more dramatic styling than the outgoing model, the new Impreza is still a little hard to swallow in terms of aesthetics. But the looks aren't the only things that changed.

Subaru said that the new Impreza provide a 30% increase in fuel economy in addition to more agile handling and more refinement. Power comes from a redesigned 148hp 2.0L flat-four that's mated to either a five-speed manual or a Lineartronic CVT and of course, standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. EPA guesstimates are 27/36 city/highway, making it the most fuel-efficient AWD car in America.

Trims are offered as followed: base, Premium, Sport Premium, Limited, and Sport Limited. No word on an STi yet, but one is probably secretly in the works.

The 2012 Impreza will arrive in dealerships this fall with prices being released closer to the launch date.

Correct me if im wrong, thanks

i like the hatch... can't wait for the wrx/sti versions, definitely will be my next purchase!

i have to see the road tests to see if they really based it on the mazda3, it's a very good benchmark to emulate.

i just hope they'll add these toys on the wrx/sti... adaptive HID projectors, push-button start, dual-zone auto-climate and please please bring back the LED tails on the wagon.

Somewhere they stated that the front doors are 5" longer for easier entry/exit. That doesn't compute for me. Longer doors = harder to open in tight parking spots and my garage. Even with plenty of room, I don't see how longer doors make anything easier.

Interior look soooooo much better. And those stupid bluetooth controls on current gen vehicles look soo out of place and ugly. Glad they moved them onto the steering wheel. I was going to get a 2011 STi but I think I might wait a bit and see how the STi looks.

I do have to agree that door mounted mirrors look like crap

-my .02 cents

If that's the worst thing we can find to pick on, then I'd say Subaru's off to a great start with the new Impreza.
Maybe they can move the door-mounted mirrors to the front wings on the first refresh?!?!?

One of these articles "confirmed" what's already been stated for the past 2 months or so:

- New base Impreza models, same WRX/STI from 2011 as 2012 models, BUT no updates yet on any option changes or trims available.

Pricing will probably be announced this summer, per usual.

Considering the 2011s WRX/STI are still hot off the press and lots of money spent on the design of the flared sedans, I'd say they're here to stay for another 2-3 years. Subaru wouldn't just toss out a redesign of the 2011 styled flare sedan for 1 production year now would they?

So expect the 2012 to be like the 2011 with minor MINOR tweaks.

Absolutely atrocious. The hatch looks the best and even it looks like a Toyota Matrix.

Thanks man, I'm really not feeling the new design the taillights and the side mirrors kill it for me, so if this is true, its a great news for me.

The mirrors are in the same place. They moved the mount to the door because they moved the base of the windshield forward. In moving the windshield forward meant they needed a quarter window at the base of the A pillar. They could either replace the quarter window with a huge mount for the mirror (example below), have the little vertical piece of glass molding obscure the mirror and mount it in the traditional spot (huge liability) or mount them on pedestals attached to the door skins.

I agree with you about longer doors being a pain in tight parking spots but I think the theory is a larger door means a larger opening for us to squeeze our huge American bodies through.

on a side note, if people think a FB20 with DI could maybe do 180-200 HP, how much might a FB25 with DI do? 240 HP? that could fit into the scheme somewhere
Personally, I would love to see the return of the RS model with a non-turbo 2.0 DI motor. I'd prefer something a little more sporty and unique than a regular Impreza but I'm not a horsepower fiend so a WRX would probably be overkill for my needs.

Imagine this...

Next Subaru STI

Direct injection twin turbo 3.0L boxer six with the trusty 6 speed MT.

To hell with conforming with WRC regulations like its 1993.

Who's with me?

Or is this a future Subaru Legacy STI spec I'm dreaming about.

As I said before I had a VIII. The EVO X interior is terrible but two wrongs don't make a nice interior.

Then he wakes up and remembers the new CAFE levels are coming and realizes there's just no place for a 400hp, 18 mpg car in the lineup that has to average 36!
