Default Do I need the plastic piece under the engine?

I just had my Borla replica headers installed at an exhaust shop. They guy took off the plastic tray under the front bumper/bottom of engine that partially covers the headers, kinda looks like a skid-plate. He said that the headers would melt it.

Does it matter if I leave it off? it snows a lot here, so I don't know if I need it or not.

You could cut it so that it clears...it will melt if you don't.

Or you could leave it off. Prior years don't even have anything.

I kept mine when I put on my HKS header, if there is clearance then do it....but if he left it off because the header is that big then dont bother. He was probably too lazy to put it on and just said it'd melt. I dont see why there would be a clearance issue. They are nice to have to keep the bottom side of ur engine cleaner.

You don't really need it, but if you're worried, buy a skidplate and some bolts & spacers for it That'll get the job done more effectively

Your car will overheat and catch fire without the shield...better put it back.

I hope you were joking, but if you were, you probably should have dropped a smiley as some people would believe you.

The plastic "skid plate" will keep your engine bay cleaner, but is by NO means an essential piece.

Actually, half of the one on my girlfriend's 2001 LGT is gone after the deep frozen slush this winter.

Car is just fine...

Totally joking, just commenting on the addition of the bigger cover on post 1999 leggys.

Ill throw a smiley in my first post for good measure though.

the reason behind the plastic shield (as i understand it) is to keep the heat from your engine from igniting leaves/paper/etc under your car. so if you take your car camping or park it on a street with lots of leaves, you probably want to replace it with something.

there are all kinds of skid plates and aero plates that can be put under there, and it will also keep some of the road salt off of your headers, which accelerates oxidation. although, i ran my legacy for a couple of years without anything and never had an issue.

personally, i would look into one of the aero plates if you don't off-road your car, or a skid plate if you do. i have a skid plate on my legacy and i am starting to look into an aero plate for my STi (which still has the plastic currently).

I busted mine on a tree stump six years ago. My engine bay gets a bit dusty and dirty, but I haven't had any problems with it removed...
