you can try it, I have a lifetime supply (or pretty damned close so I don't have to worry about it)

Last time I changed mine I reused the old one, and I haven't had any leakage problems. I wouldn't re-use it more than twice though. The worst thing that would happen is a very slow leak I think.

I reused mine with my first oil change and had a slow drip leak from the bolt. But all it took was a quick tightening and it was fine. If you don't have a new one I wouldn't worry to much just make sure you get the bolt tight. Probably not a good idea to use it to many times. By the way how much do they charge for those things at the dealer, and are they only available there or can you get them at parts stores?

I got away with it the first oil change, but not the second. I just went to the dealer and bought a bunch. The problem is trying to put the new washer in place after you already have 5 quarts of Mobil 1 in the car.

That is very interesting cause I have used the original one about 15 time now and have never had a leak or sign of one.

I'v used the same one for the last 10 changes,(original one actually) with no leaks at all. Just make sure you put it on the same way it came off. Meaning flat side against the oil pan. These things are a sales gimmick ,I'm sure. As soon as I get around to it I'm gonna replace it with a copper washer and be done with it.

I think people have a misunderstanding regarding the puropse of a crush washer. It helps to ensure you don't over tighten the drain plug and damage the pan/threads. The "crushing action' of the washer helps accomplish this (hence the name). Also, it helps ensure the plug doesn't slacken during the period until your next oil change. Since the washer is crushed as you tighten it, you will need to replace it once removed.........otherwise it doesn't do it's job.

Regards,
Kean

Gents,

You do not need a new washer at every oil change but you will need to anneal it by heating it with a torch and quenching it quickly in cold water. That will make it nice and soft to provide a good seal. We do it on aircraft sparkplug washers as a standard practice.

Same here. I'm not running to the dealer for a new one before every change.

The crush washer on my car was leaking from day one, so I've been using solid copper ones instead and no more leaks. I do have the oil temp sender/drain plug instead of the standard one but I don't think that should matter, the seating surface is the same.

NAPA gold oil filter- FIL1334 or just ask for 1334

NAPA drain plug gasket- 704-1963

If you have NAPA, this is another option

I bought 10 a year ago, no problems. I also use a small amount of PTFE tape.

I think the crush washer is more of REALLY cheap insurance. 25cents per oil change X 40 oil changes in the Subaru's life = $10 whole dollars you say buy not changing the crush washer.

How well does a Fumoto Valve hold up to salt and dirt?

I went to Tahoe and came back, and the valve action was smooth and unobstructed.

As far as the body of the valve itself is concerned... the thing is built rock solid.
