Default Tax Question

For my returns next year, when I figure out how much tax I've paid, do I add up my SS, medicare and fed taxes and figure out the difference or just the fed?

Just the federal tax.

The more important question is why are you doing this by hand when there are 2379401237895y1234895789234 programs that will do it for you?

I was just curious. I have some pretty major deductions this year but with that I'll owe fed taxes.
