Default Loud exhaust ticket!?!?!? ***!!

Hey guys,

I was driving last night and I happend to accellerate from making a turn onto a street. The speed limit was 35mph so when I saw the cop a few cars ahead in the right lane I let off still in first gear and coasted in nuetral doing 40 in a 35. As I coasted past the cop he looked at me got right behind me right away, followed for not even a second and threw on the lights. Pulls me over, asking for insurance and license and asking if this is my car?? I think he was pissed cuz he could tell I was accellerating fast, and he couldnt give me a ticket so he picked out stuff he could give me one for. I had to tell him twice it is my car. So he gives me **** for no front plate, and Ive had this car for two years with no plate on the front (its in the trunk just in case) and never gotten **** for it. So he writes me a ticket for no plate. Then gives me hell about my exhaust. I just recently switched from a turboxs tb to a turboxs dp with a Apex'i N1. So then he hands me a ticket for "excessively modified exhaust". Do cops not have anything better to do??? Its funny tho it seems like everytime I go thro the town this happend in I get pulled over. Ive gotten pulled over like four times since Ive owned this car JUST in this town!! Its a curse lol Well let me know what you guys think. I called today to see if their moving fines and they said yes?? I thought they wouldnt be?? I tried giving the guy my bond card so I could keep my license and he wouldnt take it. So my license is gone for now over this crap. Anyone had this happend before?? Well let me know what you guys think! Thanx...

You gotta live with it, there is a limit to how loud an exhaust can be.

Hey if you were a cop and you were bored, and u saw this riced out civic drive by with a loud fart can and no front plate. You would do it too ;p

SO in review
You were speeding
You didnt have a front plate (it IS the law, regardless of how long you were lucky)
You have one of the loudest exh setups available
You get yourself pulled over in that town all the time, and you are suprised that they now know you enough to know to pull you over every time they see you

Any the tickets suprise you.
BTW, he VERY EASILY could have ticketed you for accelerating too fast. There are a bout 10 different offenses he could have written it up for. None of which require him to know the speed you were going.

get a different exhaust then. the N1 is pretty loud and will draw attention like that. Sounds like the cop had pretty good reason to pull you over

Trust me, I come from loud v8 cars. I had a blown 5.0 with dumps that would set off car alarms, and never got a "loud" exhaust ticket and had that car for five years!! Also the town I got pulled over in is huge, they wouldnt "Remember my car". It just seems like they have nothing better to do. I dont go in that town but rarely, and it seems like when I do I get pulled over. I got pulled over the first week, I had my car, cuz they thought I stole it since the plates werent transferred yet. I even got a ticket for no proof and no insurance, when already had insurance on it, but since the card still said insurance for my old car they wouldnt buy it. Take it for what you want...

A loud exhaust is and no front plate are moving violations? That is a bunch of crap. I can understand why you got pulled over and received fines but points for an exhaust mod. That is absolutely absurd. Go live in another state.

With the insurance thing you should have fought it in court. If you could prove that you had insurance then most judges would let you off. You gotta fight the system.

In his defense, they seem to be targeting compact cars with loud exhaust notes... not just there, but everywhere. Ever see a cop pull a Harley over for their exhaust? Motorcycle exhausts notes are much louder than our cars but since the Harley is a different stereo-type... well its okay then.

My advice is to get an attourney that will argue this fact. Since you have history, it may sway in your favor. At the very least, if it happens again... it will just reinforce the fact they are picking you out of a crowd. The down to this is that you are giving them reason to pull you over (license plate). Once a cop pulls you over, he can always find something else... doesn't matter what kind of a car you have. Abide by the normal laws and quit giving them cause for pulling you over... especially over something as silly as a license plate.

I'm pretty sure the reason Harley's don't get tickets is b/c motorcycles don't have any exhaust restrictions. I could be wrong.

i can't stand it when cops profile like this... cops profile for all kinds of different reasons... race aint the only one... and its wrong everytime!

that sucks for you dude, bummer though... you gotta practice flying under the radar (in more ways than one, hehe)

you should probaby tone it down in that town whenever you go through there... drive under the speed limit, stay off the gas, and put that plate on... they love to hassle people over that!!! thing is, general joe ford tauras will not get pulled over for no plate 999 out of 1000 passes, but you and i on the other hands.... pulled over with way huge more frequency... you gonna drive a car that draws attention, that's exactly what you'll get, and it won't always be the type of attention you were looking for. it sucks, but that's the world we live in.

I was issued a speeding ticket two months ago (60 in a 45) and then the cop decides my exhaust is too lound. He then procedes to tell me only 'vette's and mustangs should be this loud.' Unbelievable, but no sense arguing with the police. The offense was "Noise Abatement, Modified Exhaust". Here in Florida, if you resolve this within 30 days, the fine is reduced from $75 to $11 with no points. I decided to throw the old cat back on and had the local Sherrif verify the change. No problems. Not sure how things are done in Chicago. I could have fought it in court since the cop did not take a db reading, but I thought this would be easier (and cheaper too!)

You just have to remember that it all depends on the officer that is pulling you over and his temprament for the day (and your attitude could have a factor). I was pulled over for no plate and was just given a warning myself. Any other officer might have sited me or if I had the attitude to piss em off I could have gotten one as well. It's all just up to them, but I do believe that the "ricer" stereo-type does make us more vulnerable. Like it was mentioned before, you have to accept the rules of the game if your going to play it... otherwise don't modify your car. I can assure you that other sports cars get the same crap as we do.

Default Yep

that's pretty well said...

i always put on my super-nicest-good-attitude behavior when pulled over... no matter how bad i got pegged on the radar gun (my own damn fault) or no matter how dumb a reason they've picked to hassle me this time... being extra polite can go a long way... especially if you got a cop in a bad mood...

i've seen it go both ways... bad mood, pissed off at the world, gets me outta the car about the front plate, engages me in an argument just trying to taunt me into a fight, (i almost gave in too), but i remember to kill 'em w/kindness, be apologetic, no matter how much you think you might be right, and try to sneak by with as little damage as possible.

i've had it the other way too... pull me over after clocking my 78 in a 35 speed... 5 minutes later 3 cops show up on scene, get me outta my car... not to hassle, but to pop the hood and see what its all about. 15 minutes bs'ing about the car and them drooling and asking questions, then off i go (with the ticket of course, and again... its my own damn fault). but at least i don't feel so bad... clearly they appreciated the hard work on the car, but still had to do their jobs.

always a crapshoot, but better behavior after the infraction will almost certainly help them overlook the 2 dozen other infractions on your car.

Again, how is this not your fault? I'd have to agree with some of the others on this one. It seems you have a problem with accountability.

I've driven without a front license plate on all of my cars for over 20 yrs without once getting a ticket or hassled. However, if the day comes when I do get pulled over and fined/warned, I'm not going to gripe about it. ....I know it's a violation of the vehicle code and will assume responsibility if the time comes.

This was in Elgin, I live in Bartlett. I was ever soo nice to the cop last night. Even after him asking TWICE if this was my car. After a few minutes there was two other cops that joined him. All for a "modified exhaust" lol. I called today and the no front plate is a mover but the exhaust is not. I just put this new exhaust on two weeks ago I kid you not. Maybe I can throw the old turboxs axleback set up back on, and show them that I changed it quieter. The cop even told me if i go to court theyll probably throw out the no front plate. I always have the front plate on me but not on the front of the car. Im trying to sell the car too, so we'll see. My court wont be til three days after x mas, so if I sell it in the mean time I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. Take it easy guys
