Default EJ20K Coilpacks/etc on Ej20G Harness

Alright got a few questions ! the last owner of my car is finally going to give up the rest of the stuff he has laying around and i had some questions.

Im currently running an EJ20K in a 93 wrx that originally came with an EJ20G (cars from japan) the last owner swapped in the 20k but kept the 20g ecu/intake manifold/COP's/ turbo etc etc.. to save from redoing any wiring.

So what i wanted to do and know if its possible since I'm going Power FC I'm gonna keep the ej20g wiring harness etc, but id like to swap over to the 20K intake/coil on manifold/turbo etc.

I have not seen the parts yet but can i convert my 20G COP wiring to work with the 20K single coil pack ? ( my cops are cracked this is why)

Also is there any other problems im going to get into i can think of ?

Thanks alot for any answers!

Upgrade to GD coils (sticky) and don't worry about the coil pack.

You can swap out the entire intake manifold, turbo, airbox, etc. for the EJ20K one if you wish. Re-use the EJ20G engine harness.

The only issue you will have to deal with is the TPS. The EJ20G TPS has 4 pins and incorperates an idle switch. The EJ20K has 3 pins and no idle switch. The throttlebodies cannot be swapped directly because the throttle cable is on opposite sides.

I have seen attempts to use the EJ20G throttlebody on an EJ20K intake manifold. You use a spacer to gain some clearance and mount it upside down to get the throttle cable on the correct side. Then you have to deal with minor hose and pipe issues. FWIW, I haven't seen anything more than attempts, nothing running yet. But close.

If it were mine, I wouldn't worry about it. There is argument that the EJ20G intake manifold is superior. WRC cars use a VERY close looking style. The 90 degree inlet on the turbo is considered the restricting factor, but going rotated turbo mount solves that problem nicely if your targetting those HP levels.

^ Hey thanks but do you think it would be possible to use the 20k coil pack ? since im getting it for free, ill have to look into comparing wires from both manuals i believe just want to know if anyone has done it.

And for the rest about the 20g intake i had heard that aswell.. ill see what i can do when i have the pieces in hands, making metal spacers/new wires etc isnt an issue but if its better like you and many other have said ill keep it and just put an elbow on the vf intake

For me that's the best solution.

As far as the coil pack.....I'm not sure. Does the EJ20K coilpack have a seperate or a built-in ignitor? If it's seperate, then my write-up on LegacyCentral should apply. Search for threads titled something like "need electronics help" and "How To install a 4 channel ECU" in the electronics forum. They are linked in a recent EJ20G thread here too.

A random thought....
Maybe you can try to trade some of your newfound EJ20K stuff for a set of GD coils? They really are the best solution - other than the cost of the coils themselves.

^ aw ya right forgot about the trade idea :P ill look into how the coil pack works and see if its possible, if not then ill look into trading it or selling it for gd cop's.

Thanks alot for the help!

It could work to use the EJ20K coil pack but since that basically is only two coil packs for 4 cylinders with wasted spark design you would have to connect the iginition signal (from the ignitor) for cylinder 1 with cylinder 2 and the same for cylinder 3 and cylinder 4. Then it should work but I don't know if the ignitor can handle it.

EJ20K is pretty different.

IMO, if you've got a good running EJ20G set-up already, it's not worth the effort to convert. The ECUs are not compatable. The EJ20G is a 4 plug ECU and the EJ20K is 3 plugs.

The write ups on LegacyCentral cover exactly what you wish to do....Run a 2 channel coilpack with a 4 channel ECU. Basically....(4 channel ECU)>>(4 channel ignitor)>>join pairs of ignitor outputs>>(2 channel coilpack).

^ Ya just got all the stuff and i think im gonna go with your idea and just sell this stuff keep my 20g electronics on my 20k and use a 20g power fc.

Got 2 quick questions thou

Got a ihi vf23 ? should i just throw it on or is there not much of a difference with the ej20g 16g i have on it right now. And are the 20K injectors bigger then 20g ones ?

IIRC, EJ20K injectors are 480cc/min (yellow). EJ20G are 440cc/min(grey).

Can't comment on the turbo size or CFM, but I believe that the VF23 should spool faster. If it's also bigger....Bonus!!

The difference between yellow top EJ20K injectors and grey top EJ20G injectors is about 40%.

I just saw this thread. I've got no spark on my ej20k swap, and I'm trying to figure out if my ej20k coil pack has a built in ignitor or if I need to find one somewhere, or if there's another solution.

Thank for the help.

The EJ20k coil does not have an igniter. It relies on an external igniter which is located on the same bracket that holds the boost solenoid.
