Summertime! Post your car detailing questions, comments, before and after pictures...
I'm sure people would like a detailing thread! What are everyones experiences with products, procedures, etc???
I'm using mostly/all Griot's Garage products, including their random orbital polisher. Had pretty good results with those. Has anyone ever used "white wall cleaner" to clean their rims??? My friend that works for Les Schwab introduced me to this, as this is what they use to clean wheels because it has some acidity to it. It works VERY, VERY well, however I'm worried about it 'hurting' my wheels. if that is possible, any thoughts???

never used it, sorry.
I'm curious about taping your car before polishing and waxing. Why? Where? It might be cool to list what you're using in this thread as well. I'll go first: These are all Griots Garage products: Random Orbital Polisher - 6" with polishing pads and waxing pads Machine Polish 2 & 3 Best In Show wax Glass polish (good for removing water spots) Claybar Speedshine (use with claybar and for a nice shine in between waxes) Glass Cleaner (I think i just wanted to buy something when I was at that Griots Garage meet last weekend) Interior spray (same thing as the glass cleaner, I think I just wanted to buy something) I've only used the above stuff for a small section of the car. Got rid of some light scratches very easily. I'm hoping I can sneak some time in on Sunday to work on more scratches. -joel |

i just bought me a orbital polisher from Griot's this weekend. washed my car with dish soap to remove the old wax, then did the 3 step. started with # 3 then # 2 then waxed. car looks awesome, cant believe i waited so long to buy one of these machines. oh and i did tape off my car. taped off the trim, winsheild wipers and any plastic and all the cracks in the between the body parts. made the clean up soo much easier. but it adds about an hour to the job. in all took me about 6-7 hours to do it, but then again it was my first time and i did do the three step process.

Joel,
Its not necessary to use the speedshine when you clay your car. what you should do is put a couple of drops of car wash soap in a spray bottle with water and use that. the only thing you are doing is providing a lubricant for the clay. I like to do it this way, as Speedshine is relatively expensive. Its an AWESOME product though, and it smells good. As far as taping, the only reason for tape that I have found is to protect pieces of your car that you do not want to get wax on. such as, molding, windshield wiper arms, headlights, etc. it just makes the final product look that much better, because as you probably know it is very difficult to get dried wax off of plastic and such. I've also seen people mask of the spaces between body panels so wax doesn't get in the cracks. This is a pretty good idea and the next time I wax my car i'll do that, because trying to get wax out of cracks in a PITA! Devin EDIT: Its going to be nice this weekend, maybe a detail meet somewhere???? I don't have room or I would volunteer my house. |

Westley's bleche(?) white is good stuff for cleaning brake dust off tires and wheels. I use it all the time. I do, however, make sure the wheels are wet before applying, then I spray them down and let soak for a few, then scrub and rinse.

I don't really like taking before pics when my car is gross and dirty, so here are a few of mine and my buddies OBS after our wash/wax session a fewdays ago...
(My comp crashed like 3 days ago and I havent installed PS again, so these are all unedited and could use some touch ups... especially the last one) |

David - Were you at the meet on Sunday then? Which car was yours?
oh, for future ref, ideally you're supposed to go 3-2-3. you want to follow #2 with #3 to smooth out what #2 did. (there's a joke in there somewhere). So it would really be a 4 step process. so if you tape the area in between are you just leaving that little portion untouched? Its probably an insignificant portion, but just curious. -joel |

taping off stuff prevents getting wax in the impossible areas to reach, and the wax will dry over time and you will have white concrete that looks bad.

Griots, orbital, and really once u learn how to use it, you dont need to tape off the car. Try applying the liquid to the pad in the center, and if it was ur first time using it you should have had the speed down lower. Ive been using my machine for a couple years now, even some have borrowed it works well, just keep up on a cycle. At some point ive bought and used just about every Griots liquid product, some are much better then others, best of show wax seems to be the hardest one to use, and seems like every guy has his own way of using it. Even the guys that sell it apply and remove it all differnt, i just couldnt get it to work for me, so i went to something else.

I don't tape for waxing, in my opinion...any wax that will stain trim is inferior and outdated. I'm not a Griots guy, I think they're a great entry level product as theyre readily available but theres better stuff out there. Duragloss and Optimum are my general go to brands. I used a sealant to "wax" my rims when I first got them and they shed brake dust rather easily. I primarily do Optimum ONR washes which work well with wheels. P21s makes a great wheel gel for those super stubborn wheels. |

couple of drops of car wash w/ water in a spray bottle instead of the speed shine stuff? sounds good and a good way to save some dough.
I had some water spots on my wife's kia that have plagued me for two years. Was loading some stuff into it this evening and thought I'd give it a whirl with the polisher. i only did a small section as I was supposed to be doing something else. obviously, the clear part is the part i worked on. i swear that polisher is like a magic wand. Just made them disappear. used claybar, machine polish 3, wax. i really can't wait until I get a day to just have at the whole car. Mine first though of course. -joel |

Be sure you post some pics once you get to the whole car done. I had it looking awesome a few summers back when I moved back from NC. I was working on it all the time. |

Yeah, only use it for clay. the only thing you need when claying is a lubricant, you don't need a quick detailer, as you will be doing multiple steps after that will negate anything a quick detailer adds. Its just a easy way to save that 15dollar bottle.
