Default WI + STI water tank + Utec: Where do I begin?

I'm moving to california this summer and have that wonderful 91 octane gas to look forward to. I've spent the last hour trying to figure out what my options are but I'm still confused on all the different options.

What would be sweet is to use the STI water sprayer tank (I have a fmic so it's of no use right now) hooked up in a way so that when the floater switch goes down it would cut power to my BCS. That would be a nice safety net for when water is low. Of course it does not cover me in pump failure or clog.

I really want to use my Utec to its full potential. It seems like I should be able to use the spare solenoid controller for something.

I guess I want to experiment with just water first, then mabye try an water/alc blend?

I am running a UTEC (have it pull massive timing above 3 count for knock), I run (and sell) Snow Performance Stage 2 with SafeInjection (kills boost whenever flow error is detect) and together it is a pretty bullet proof kit at a reasonable price. You can mount this kit on you stock tank (It is what I did for mine).

O yea as for spray I would run meth/distilled water combo for daily driving as its a cheap effective mixture.

Cool. Do you have the utec start the injection with the solenoid?

For example, if you want to turn the Spare Solenoid when RPM is greater than 3000 rpm and TPS is greater than 50% then set RPM to 65, TPS % to 50. Set the other parameters to a low value such as Intake Air Temperature to 0, Coolant Temperature to 0 and Manifold Absolute Pressure to –50.

3. Spare Solenoid Off Delay lets you set the time that the spare solenoid will remain on after the conditions are no longer met. This may be used to keep the spare solenoid on during a gear change.

No because I let the snow performance controller do that while the UTEC does the timing and fuel. I am not using the UTEC to the fullest but I like the way I have it set up right now.

That depends on the system, im using the IC Spray tank but have high pressure lines in my system, the tank feeds the pump with a large line then feeds the accumulator and after that it comes down to a smaller line until it goes and splits up, i wanted to make sure i could keep up with all the flow needs. I would run new lines they are cheap and easy to run.

You will run new lines because you will leave your factory pump and lines in place (still can be used). You basically install a new fitting in the tank and then run a line to the pump and then a line from the pump to the throttle body.

you dont want the plunger in the tank to cut your boost its not very accurate and u can get it to go off cornering hard. I know i have it setup to light up a light on gauge pod when the tank it low.

After trolling this forum and sending out a few PMs I think I have come to a decision.

I live on the East now and have tuned the car for 93 octane gas. I’m moving to California this summer and am looking towards a 50/50 water/meth setup to help bridge the gap between 93 and 91 octane.

My main goal is reducing knock while keeping similar power. Of course I will experiment with a more aggressive tune but I would be happy just being able to run the same boost/timing I have now. While the progressive kits look nice, I think I’m going to be fine with a single stage of injection starting at 15psi. I’m going to try that combo first, then go from there.

15psi is an arbitrary number but I’m just looking for that pinch of detonation resistance at high load while not having to worry about filling the water/meth tank obsessively. Who knows, I may just try water first.

I’m going to go with the coolingmist 150psi pump kit and also get the clog nozzle detector. I probably won’t use the included boost switch because I’ll use the utec spare solenoid output. Who knows, turboxs might surprise me and update STI firmware to at least have the same features WRX firmware has.

I’m going to first use the stock IC tank but it looks like I will have to run new lines. No big deal. After I get used to this system and think I want the other features I’ll just buy vari-cooler. I’m looking forward to installing the kit. This should be fun.

Thanks everybody. This forum is a great addition to nasioc.

The UTEC will be updated shortly with progressive controls over its spare solenoid so your pathway should work out nicely for you. Our snow kits can also come with a boost activated kit for 275 shipped and for an addtional 125 you can upgrade to the failsafe. Either snow or coolingmist will work nicely with your planned setup.
