That was my first year up there and obviously the map was not ready to handle that much altitude... The smoke is not bad at sea level but up there there is less oxygen the total fuel air mixture is too rich...
That smoke will be gone at high altitude by next year! Greg

I wonder what kind of gas mileage that boxer diesel gets, that is pretty badass, where do you even get that motor from? What car does it come out of? I'm pretty sure subaru doesnt have any diesels in america at least, but then again they keep a lot from us (Hence the STi Wagon, for example)

There are several of us on this Forum that have a Genuine 22B, though just the two mentioned are in the USA. It is possible I might try and Import mine after my Subaru Legacy project is finished, it's eating up more money than any other car I have ever owned

There is someone in Indiana that has a 22b and a 05 STi as a daily driver. I've seen him post several times on indianaimpreza.com. Not sure if he is one of the two owners mentioned, but it is indeed a real 22b.

You are half right. A diesel motor doesn't have a throttle body. It relies on fuel being injected to the motor and the computer tries to regulate the mixture as the turbo catches up with the air. Most newer diesel manufacturers have a decent hold on the whole mixture thing but when you start hot rodding them its a whole different story. Vw has been racing diesels for years. I really wish this would catch on in the Subaru world!

BTW, the smoke is gone! The ECU got a much better calibration and the car is now amazing to drive and race!
