Default Drag racers, I seek your input for my motor swap :)

I have an 02 wrx with a wasted motor.

WHich will make me faster? Keep in mind that I am going to be doing an RA gearset, which will basically gear the car down.

STI 2.5 shortblock. TON of torque, a couple hp.

or

V7 budget longblock.
Same power, about the same torque, 8000rpm redline.

The torque would be great, but I am thinking the ability to spin freely to 8000rpm will make the car faster overall, especially with the RA gearset effectively shortening each gear, the extra 1000rpm will stretch the lower gears back out,for a tremendous gain in acceleration.

How far off am I??

Why? I havn't been beat by one at the track......yet!

Seriously though, go with the ver7 because if you're dragracing then you have or will think about nitrous and the extra strength of the ver7 will serve you better.

v7 is soooo smooth at 8k ;-)

Then again, a 257 short w/ worked heads and a good set of cams would make a screamer...

2 very different paths for speed...

22 would be teeny on the 2.5. If price is an issue, usdm 2.5. If you want finess, v7

I would get the 2.0. At the top of 4th gera, at 8krpm, you'll be at about 110-115, which is pretty much where your vf22 is going to be able to take you in terms of trap speed at the MOST. Good luck dude.

Will you get an ecu with the v7 or leave the avcs dead?

I say go with the longblock since theres so many beatdown miles on the heads.

But he would need at the least cams to make any power up there with just the 257 SB. If he got a buget V7 LB he would all ready have the cams and good heads to spin to 8k.
Dave I say go the V7 LB I think you will be much happier in the end.

Honestly an 8k limit and a 5 speed would be perfect for.
I bet your ¼ mile time would benefit quite a bit too.

would he? Strange... My STi makes peak HP at 7,500, and I haven't gotten the limiter kicked up to 8K yet on it... just 7,500.

Cams would definitely make a difference at that RPM, but just getting a good turbo with plenty of turbine flow is all you need.

If he went with the 257. He would be using the stock WRX cams and heads the 2002 ones with shim over bucket valvetrain. I would not want to push that to 8k.

Your NASIOC Administrator

Yeah, cause theres no chance of blowing an STi motor by over revving it...

WIth the longblock, no ecu, AVCS dead.

with the 2.5, stock WRX cams, stock unworked wrx heads, no money for headwork or cams.

I think I am agreeing that the 8k redline will be awesome with the 5 speed, and the thing about putting me at 110-112 at the top of fourth sounds about perfect.
I ran JUST shy of 108 with my current setup, I am betting that the extra 1k redline will push me close to that 110-112 (coupled with the RA gearing)

And even though the 2.0 wont give me the torque that the 2.5 would, I am still going to effectively be putting a good bit more torque to the ground with the lower gearing anyway....

Not a chance in hell that is happening. If I wanted a GM product I would buy a camaro. ANd any 04 that I find will most likely have been beaten and who knows how it was taken care of. I will never buy a new Subaru again due to the GM quality. If They go back to Japanese ownership I will.

My next subaru will be a used L 2 door with a swap

My plan is to fix this, then once its paid off buy a Jeep (with the 4.0ho motor) for a daily driver. Keeping this as a toy
