if you're going from a 17x8 to a 17x9, I would consider at least a 245 tire size vs. the stock 235.

Got my grids yesterday. 17x9 +42 and they look great. Fills the fender pretty nice but not enough to cause any rubbing. Im lowered on Tanabe DF210 springs and I have no fitment issues. The tire is the oem Dunlop SP01 (235/45/17). So its a slight stretch. I think if I have 255 they might need some rolling in the rear. My camber specs are Front:2.25 and Rear: 2.5 so if your using the factory settings these wheels will look a little more flush.

how'd you think they'd handle a slight lower? say RCE yellows.

OK, so I've read most of the posts here and got a pretty good idea of what works for my 2011 WRX, but still have many lingering questions. I'm planning on purchasing some 18x8.5 Work wheels very soon but figured I'd make sure I have the whole picture before hand. The specs of my planned, and hopefully ideal, setup are 18x8.5 +47 and i wanted to put 255/35/18 Michelin Pilot Super Sports on them. I don't currently auto x or go to the track but would like to at some point while utilizing this street setup for the time being.
-Is there a better offset for ideal fitment and best steering feel, or is that fine? -Are 8.5" width wheels too small for 255 width tires?...If not, is it more prone to spongy, less responsive steering/turn in or is it negligible? Would a 9" wheel absolutely be better, and if so what offset would be ideal for that? I like the idea of running 8.5" vs 9" because of less weight, a little more cushion over the sidewall on the 8.5" compared to the 9" spreading it out more (makes sense in my head at least), cost, possibly less chance of rubbing, and closer to stock offset choices. -are these valid assessments? My main concerns are- I really prefer not to roll the rears(at least at this time); best fitment for steering feel(i keep hearing wider=worse steering feel); and how harsh the 35 sidewall will be on the wheel and on my back compared to the stock 235/45/17 as i have no experience with anything more aggressive than stock. I don't want too little cushion on my wheels for when i hit a pothole on the crappy New England roads after the winter, so if anyone can comment on that it would be nice. I will be on stock suspension for the foreseeable future but do plan on lowering eventually, most likely with some good coil overs (slight drop only 1"or so). -If i get coil overs sooner will rolling likely be necessary?...with added camber? I was also considering a 245/40/18 tire, only because of fitment (although I heard 255/35 are actually easier to fit because of their height) or ride comfort, which i would definitely run on an 8.5" wheel. But I like the idea of the 255 giving me better gearing and that extra grip. Any other tire suggestions are welcome, I'm primarily concerned with best wet/dry grip for daily driving, but tire wear and noise are a slight concern too, I'm just unfamiliar with which tires run wide/skinny and if they would affect fitment. So if anyone could clear up my questions so i can order wheels that would be super, thanks. |

I think the steering feel isn't an issue. I was worried when I was putting on my 18x10 ET35 and 285/30/18's, but the steering is very light and responsive. I can do 3 point turns with 1 finger and honestly can't feel much difference between these and the 16x6.5 ET55 and 205/60/16's they replaced. Any offset that doesn't require rolling your fenders will be fine.
Also, remember that the sidewall thickness is related to the width of the tire and you can't just ask how a 35 sidewall will be. A 235/40/18 and a 265/35/18 both have a sidewall that is 3.7". The brand and model of tire will have more of an effect on how the tires ride and feel as a tire with soft sidewalls will have more give and feel smoother on rough roads. Tire pressure will also have a large impact on how the tires feel. I have tires with squishy sidewalls and I am currently running them at 43 psi front and 41 psi rear which decreased their ride comfort, but also increased their responsiveness. |

9" vs 8.5" wont effect that size much, meaning the sidewalks won't be too stretched or pinched. The "little more cushion" doesn't make sense. The tire is the same size, and the sidewall height is the same regardless of wheel width. Rubbing depends on offset. Picking a correct offset is based on a wheel width. Just because stock offset is 53 (or whatever) doesn't mean that is the optimal offset for every width wheel. With an offset that high, you should not have to worry about needing to roll fenders. Getting coilovers doesn't mean you'll need to rolls especially with an offset that conservative. In fact, an offset that high will limit the amount of camber you are able to dial on stock suspension. Personally, for an 8.5" wheel I'd move closer to 40 than 50. The "35" is a percentage, not a static number (a VERY common misconception....). Quote:
You can 1-finger 3 point turn? That's power steering. Last edited by sc00by4life; 04-05-2012 at 06:17 AM. |

Thanks, I'll just stick with an 8.5 than. Yea i wasn't sure if the wheel width made any difference in feel or if the width stretched or squished the sidewall up or down, thanks for clearing it up, like i said I've only had the stock size. The question about the "35" sidewall was just in reference to my choice of 255/35/18 tires, I understand it is a percentage and would vary as width increased/decreased. I was just looking for observations on how that tire compares with the stock tire as it has something like a 4.3" sidewall compared to the 3.7" or so on that tire, i would assume you would feel more of the road but was just wondering how noticeable it was.

how wide do star specs run? I'm planning to buy the rota Ds 18x9.5 +40 offset and wrap them in either star specs or Extremecontact DW 265/35/18, I'm worried that the star specs might cause problems. I will be riding on Bilstein+RCE yellows.

Sorry for the questions guys, but everytime i search i find mixed opinions.
for a 2012 wrx on stock suspension will a 18x9.5 +40 with 255/35/18 be ok. i really dont want to roll my fenders.. i have heard many people say its ok, and others saying the offset is not good. or should i go with 18x8.5 +35 offset I may or may no lower the car in the future (coilovers) but if i do i dont want too low, i already learned my lesson on lowering!! any input will be much apprecciated. thanx |

I actually went out today and pulled the passenger fender more and flared it.
I had already done the driver's side on friday. I need to do a little cleanup in a few spots and I'm going to need to paint the lips when I'm done, but I'm very happy with how it's turning out. I don't want to mess with the front too much since it hasn't rubbed, but I'm not sure I like how it looks flared in the rear, but not the front. Here are pics from before it was flared: [/quote] Front |

I think there just to big. Im not a big fan of the pulled fender. Maybe its just me but I dont like poke. Maybe try getting an aftermarket alignment with more camber. That would bring the tops in a bit more

That thing looks tough from the back. The front could use some imo. Keep it up! |
