80's Suby gurus crack and egg of knowledge on me
So I may have found my rallycross car. It's a 1981 GL hatchback. Now I just need to figure out how to get it here. It's got studded snow tires on the front, so driving it here isn't really an option. I might be able to borrow a trailer locally. Would it be advisable to get a tow dolly and disengage the AWD, or is that just asking for trouble? Also, does anybody know what bolt pattern the wheels would be?

Either trailer it or drive it.
Didn't the OS Scoobs have a button to turn the 4wd off and on? |

I think the guy said it has some kind of little lever to engage the 4WD. My '87 DL had a push button on the shifter.

Hmmm. I think you have to lock the drive wheels if you have it towed. Say in 2wd, it's front wheel drive, then lift the front off the ground. I could be wrong though.
I still say drive it. Studded tires will just make noise and the studs will fall out. You're gonna buy a set of rally tires anyways right?!?...... |

it's still better to put it on a trailer if you can, whether 2wd or 4wd. but sometimes a trailer isn't an option, so...
the bolt pattern should be the same as a brat - 4x140 check this site out -- http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/80s/wheels2/wheels.html have fun and happy rallying !! crisco |

I actually found a local junk yard that had two wheels that will work, so I'm going to drive the car back. Hopefully I'll have it here by the weekend and it will make its debut at the rallycross on Saturday. -Bryce |

If you want to trailer it with a dolly, just make sure the 4WD is disengaged, then you can tow it as far and as fast as you want. It's not like AWD.
Do realize, you're looking at a car that not only has in the neighborhood of about 75hp, but also has a very anti-rallycross feature... a front-wheel parking brake Other than that, just give it a tune-up and it should be good to go. It will be slow, but it will be tough as nails, so don't feel bashful about thrashing it. |

Thanks for the info. I'm not expecting this thing to break any speed records, I just want something fun that I'm not worried about breaking. If all I wanted to do was go fast I have a couple other cars that would serve the purpose much better. I didn't realize that about the parking brake. That's good information to know, thanks.
