misfire help!
so recently earlier today i was driving on the free way, then suddenly my CEL starts blinking. i check the code (P0304).
as soon as i got off work i strolled over to rallysport to pick up a new set of spark plugs(oem). installed them, but seems to still be blinking? any input would be greatly appreciated.

you will need to clear the code. pull the neg battery terminal and let it sit for a bit. Or take it to autozone and have them clear the code with their reader.

If its still flashing then it is still misfiring in cylinder 4. Could be injector, tune, burnt valve etc.

could be coil pack.. swap that after you reset the code and see if the mis fire follows the coil pack.
thats been my misfire problem both times |

Once I found out my coil pack was bad I bought a new one... Just switch the two right next to each other. But remember to switch the wires that plug into them. Does that make sense?

if the CEL doesn't follow the coilpack. Do the same thing with the injector. I have had injectors go bad. If it's 4 that is the problem switch 2 and 4 injectors (after you try the coilpack) if the cel follows the injector that's your problem. Don't fool around with the off the shelf injector cleaner it doesn't do ANY good. If they are dirty send them in to Deatschwerks and have them actually cleaned.

haha a bugeye curse
well just swapped my #4 coil pack with #2 and then it misfired cylinders 1,2,&4? i then swapped the sparkplugs and swapped the coilpacks back and is now back to misfiring #4. so my guess would be the coilpack? |

weird? maybe try swapping coil packs one more time.. maybe switch 4 with 1 and make sure to reset the ecu.
sucks jon sorry. i hope you figure it out fast |

I just had a guy bring me his 02 wrx wagon in for the same reason, blinking MIL and running like garbage! Misfires were on 1,3,&4. I unplugged all the coil packs from the harness and turned the key to the start position. Listening to the motor crank, it sounded very uneven, like it loped every revolution. I then did a compression check. 1 and 4 were at 0! Turns out he had been running 85 octane in it for the last 2 years. Burnt motor, for sure.
Thats the first thing I do when I diagnose misfires, turn the motor without ignition and listen for an even, or uneven crank. If that test clears, then I move on to coils, plugs, compression and then fuel. |

I had a cyl 3 misfire and i went through everything and the last thing i finally did was swap cyl 3 and 4 plugs and it stopped, for some reason, it just didn't like that plug in cyl 3 but once it was moved to cyl 4 it was fine. After changing plugs, wires, adjusting valve lash 10x, doing a leak down test, rear O2 sensor and fuel injector cleaner, just moving the plugs fixed it.

if you switched the coilpacks around and it's still in the same cylinder I wouldn't spend money on coilpacks. I think you have ruled that out. I would move on to injectors and swap them around and see if the CEL follows the injector.

hm... i'll start switching my sparkplugs around then.
if that doesn't work then i guess i'll work on my injectors |

Yeah I would go to injectors next... They are a pain in the ass haha but that would be my next move.. You might need to buy some new donut gasket things that go on the end of the injectors. Maybe grab some Vaseline so the injectors slide in easier and don't tear the gasket

For what its worth: My car had the p0304 code come up a week ago. I had the spark plugs replaced and nothing changed so I took it down to Solid Auto again and found out I had a burnt valve on cylinder four, which apparently isn't that uncommon at my milage (115K) If you have the tool, you should check your compression, which will let you know if its actual damage or something like a coilpack, fuel filter, dirty manifold etc.
