Anyone on the MD/PA/DE border able to help?
Looks like I'll be needing to drop the trans in my '02 WRX I unfortunately do not have a garage to work in nor the tools or know how really to perform a job like this. I was hoping someone in the area wouldn't mind lending their knowledge, tools, and garage to a Subie owner in need.
I'm not sure but I think I need to replace the throw out bearing.

I'll keep you in mind, though I'm looking for something a bit closer to me. The car needs to be towed. Unless I can rent a roll on trailer.
PS I'm in Elkton, MD |

I've personally never dropped a subie trans but i wouldn't mind lending a hand if you guys end up doing this on a day I'm available. I could bring odds and ends tools, jacks/stands. Possibly a trans jack too. This is something I'm probably doing next summer myself anyways

It's really easy to pull the transmission out of these things. If your doing throw out bearing makes sense to replace clutch since you have it down to that point

The clutch was replaced not very long ago. I'd say it's less than 6 months old. for some reason something just gave out. Whether it's the throw out bearing or a clutch fork or something worse I don't know. All I know is the car isn't moving without a tow.

What do you mean that the car isn't moving? Will it start? Does it go into gear? What exactly is the problem?

Car starts but will not go into gear. The shift fork moves freely by hand. I've been told this may be a clip that popped off the throw out bearing/bad throw out bearing/broken shift fork.

I might be able to help. Did you order a new clutch while you've got the trans out?

No I just put a new clutch in it a couple months go. I can't really afford ANOTHER clutch. The last clutch job nearly drained my funds. My problems all started after the new clutch was installed.

You should check the tranny dip stick and make sure that a: there is fluid in the trans, and b: that the fluid doesn't look terrible. It should be reddish and somewhat translucent. I would also recommend getting at least a qt of trans fluid to compensate for any fluid that spills out when we drop the trans.
Is this parking lot anyplace that you could leave the car for awhile if the problem is in the trans itself? You are also going to need to get a 32 mm axle nut socket, they are usually a free rental at most auto parts stores unless someone else has one who is coming. |

The proper transmission fluid, for a MANUAL transmission (the clutch is the key word here) is NOT reddish. One can use a typical shallow well 32mm for a Subaru axle nut, although you don't HAVE to take the stub axles out of the hubs.

I just drained /filled my trans fluid last week in my MT subaru last week and what came out and went in were both red. Maybe oem gear lube is a different color. My real point about the axle socket is that most people don't keep a 32 mm socket in their set whether it's deep or shallow, but a free rental keeps the costs down for someone who doesn't have much money nor much necessity for suc

I have a 3/8 drive torque wrench also. I have basic hand tools. All of my air powered tools are at my in laws house. Along with my jack and jacks stands. So all I have is hand tools.
