Default Snow/Ice Tires...studs?

Trying to find out whats a good snow/ice tire.
Also would like someone explain teh different compunds of tires and what achieves what.

Next up where can you get studding done?

It's hard to explain the compounds and stuff because I have no clue! But a good agressive snow/ice tire will have very open square blocks with sipes. Blocks grip the snow, sipes grip the ice. Don't get studs unless you only plan on having them on the car when the roads are covered. I have studded Nokian Hakka 1s that have been in the garage for 2 years with one real use at an ice race, and that's it. They are the worst POS to drive on dry pavement, and competition (rally-x, etc) doesn't usually allow studs unless it's ice racing. As you can tell I'm very anti-stud! I just haven't had the time to sit there and rip them out with a plyers just yet, and I'm saving them for ice racing (even though the only street car that beat me last year was on non-studded Hakka 1s).
